Virtual Reality Pencil and Paper Tests for Neglect: A Protocol

Abstract: Hemispatial neglect is a common disorder that can occur after a lesion in the right hemisphere. Its main characterization is the difficulty in processing visual stimuli emanating from the space contralateral to the lesion. Pencil and paper tests (such as target cancellation, line bisection, or drawing copy) are used to diagnose neglect. We propose using virtual reality technology and haptic force feedback to enhance pencil and paper tests. Our system can track the patients' eye-gaze and their hand movements. A… Show more

“…It is widely accepted and several studies have reported similar results, in many of its variations (Jewell and McCourt, 2000 for a review; Ferber and Karnath, 2001; Longo and Lourenco, 2006; Rorden et al, 2006). Very few studies have simulated the line bisection task in an immersive virtual environment (Baheux et al, 2006; Garrison and Ellard, 2009). Therefore, our aim was to employ this paradigm to test the feasibility of our technical proposal for registering fNIRS signals in an immersive VR environment.…”

“…Several of the tasks were specifically built for the assessment and other, more entertaining tasks for the rehabilitation. For the experiment presented in this paper, we used a virtual replica of the paper and pencil tests that was built to test new rehabilitation techniques and to provide a precise characterization of the neglect [6]. The assessment is based on the combination of performance and the eye-gaze pattern of the subject.…”

“…Old and favoured paper-and-pencil tests like line-bisection and cancellation tests in neglect have been converted to computer-based versions which have led to increased sensitive to the symptoms of neglect [51][52][53][54][55], as well as expansions of said tests to include observations and assessment of aberrant behaviour [54,[56][57][58][59][60][61], and the detection and separation of multiple disorders [62]. New assessment techniques have also been introduced e.g.…”
