Virtual bronchoscopy and 3D reconstruction in the critical care setting

Abstract: Background: Airway management of the critically ill patient is challenging. An audit of airway management in the UK reported higher incidence of significant airway complications (death and hypoxic brain damage) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) compared to regular anesthetic practice in the operating theatre.1 Virtual bronchoscopy (VB) can be valuable in airway management in the ICU. Methods: Virtual reality (VR) emerged in the clinical field 20 years ago2,3 utilizing graphics, high-end information technology, … Show more

“…Additionally, its used objectives are close to those identified in OT and include risk factors associated with difficult tracheal intubation [12]. Considering any investigations of the airway that already done; such as chest x-ray, CT scan and 3D and Virtual Endoscopy (VE) could be helpful in airway evaluation and might be derive the plan for airway management in critically ill patients [13]. It's recommended to define the cricothyroid membrane for possible front of neck airway (FONA) as a strategy of a plan for failure.…”

“…Virtual imaging of the airway is a recent advance in the technology of evaluating the airway. [ 19 20 21 ] Meticulous preparation includes arranging equipment, drugs and personnel, within the limitation of time. NAP4 recommends the following as prerequisites for safe management of acute airway obstruction (AAO).…”
