Abstract: A series of novel side chain polymers-silylated polyethylenes were prepared containing 4′-methoxyphenyl-4-(ω-alkenyloxy)benzoate mesogenic groups of the general formula {-CH2-CH[SiMe2-(CH2)mOC6H4C(O)OC6H4OMe]}n-, where m ) 4, 5, 8, 11. The ones having five and eight carbon atoms in the alkane moiety of a flexible spacer proved to be liquid crystalline, independent of molecular weight (DP ) 75, 230). Alternative synthetic pathways have been described starting with anionic polymerization of Me3SiVi or Me2PhSiVi … Show more

“…Synthetic routes to polymers containing the established mesogenic groups [19], 4 0 -methoxyphenyl-4-(4-pentenyloxy)benzoate and 4 0 -undecanyloxy-4-(4-pentenyloxy)biphenyl, were simplified (Scheme 2). The use of (HMe 2 Si) 3 CH (2) as a precursor in the place of [CH 2 ‚CH(Me) 2 Si] 3 CH (1) made it possible to synthesize mesogenic alkenes by direct hydrosilylation, without reaction with HMe 2 SiCl and subsequent reduction with LiAlH 4 (Scheme 1).…”

“…Azobenzene elastomers (styrene-butadiene-styrene) ( I ) for tunable gratings were prepared recently by this route [17] as well as functionalized polymer precursors for liquid crystalline polymer networks based on cinnamate ( II ) [18] and chalcone ( III ) [13] moieties in the side chain (Figure 2). The LC properties of polymers depend not only on the structure of the side chain mesogen or length of flexible spacer, but also on the flexibility of polymer skeleton and the latter is affected both by molecular weight (M n ) and polydispersity (PDI = M w /M n ) [15,19,20]. …”

“…Poly(carbosilane)s were generally used as high‐yield precursors to SiC ceramics . Poly(silmethylene)s are of particular attractive among the poly(carbosilane)s family because their impressively high content of Si elements leads to excellent thermal stability . Recently, the use of poly(silmethylene)s as low‐dielectric constant has aroused much attention because the low polarity of Si–C bonds endows poly(silmethylene)s with low‐dielectric constant .…”
