Vinasse biogas for energy generation in Brazil: An assessment of economic feasibility, energy potential and avoided CO2 emissions

Abstract: Energy recovery from waste is one of the strategies that can assist the expansion of renewable energy in Brazil. Among the various types of waste, vinasse, which is a residue that contains a high organic load, originates from the sugarcane industry, which is a very important industry for the Brazilian economy. Due to high levels of sugarcane harvesting in the country and the production of large amounts of ethanol, vinasse is produced at high levels in Brazil. In this context, this paper presents an energy anal… Show more

“…Biogas has a great potential opportunity for using the vinasse. Many studies have been carried out about the bio-digestion of vinasse [42][43][44]. Biogas is an easy to handle fuel since it can be transported in high-pressure cylinders, or by pipeline, and can fuel farm machinery and trucks to partially replace diesel [45].…”

“…The expansion of STPs that use anaerobic treatment systems in Brazil has increased the generation of by-products of anaerobic digestion, such as biogas and sludge (ROSA et al, 2018). These by-products can be used for energy recovery purposes, which has raised interest in their management, due to the possibility of diversifying and expanding the Brazilian energy matrix and reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases (Bernal et al, 2017).…”

“…For Bernal et al (2017) and Rosa et al (2016), studying the energy recovery from byproducts generated in UASB reactors is important and can contribute to enhance the Brazilian energy matrix by using renewable sources from the sanitation sector.…”

“…Therefore, it is expected that the sludge, usually characterized as the type of residue disposed of in landfills, will become an energy source, a paradigm change regarding its final destination (Gu et al, 2017). For Bernal et al (2017) and Rosa et al (2016), studying the energy recovery from byproducts generated in UASB reactors is important and can contribute to enhance the Brazilian energy matrix by using renewable sources from the sanitation sector.…”
