Video Transmission Using Device-to-Device Communications: A Survey

Abstract: In recent years, the growing interest in video-based applications has resulted in a rapid increase in wireless data traffic and meeting the stringent quality-of-experience (QoE) requirements for such type of traffic poses a great challenge given the scarce spectrum. As a consequence, new approaches have been investigated to tackle this problem and one promising solution proposed by researchers is to exploit deviceto-device (D2D) communication in video transmission. D2D communication has been presented as an in… Show more

“…These include caching in BSs [6], caching on devices [7], caching in heterogeneous networks [16], caching in vehicles [17], etc. As caching on devices along with high performance device-to-device (D2D) communications can bring huge benefits to the network without installing new infrastructure, cache-aided wireless D2D networks have been widely discussed in the literature [13]- [15]. While many papers investigate the design and implementation aspects, another set of investigations focuses on characterizing the asymptotic behavior as the number of users N goes to infinity.…”

“…In recent years, the increase in devices such as smartphones and tablets has led to an exponential growth in the amount of videos captured and shared on social media like YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram [ 1 , 2 ]. Different forms of distortions can be introduced during the video acquisition and transmission processes.…”

“…The authors proposed an algorithm to minimize transmission through the BS to save cost while considering the QoE, which was expressed in terms of the average number of received blocks. For an extensive survey on video steaming over D2D networks, the reader is referred to [28].…”
