Background: Mental health facilities and other medium and long-stay hospital wards have been associated with poor quality care and human rights violations. This idea has led us to do this qualitative research. Objective: To explore how the health care professionals working at the medium and long-term hospitalisation services of the Network of Mental Health Facilities of Gran Canaria (Red de Salud Mental de Gran Canaria) perceive, from the human rights standpoint, the quality of the care that they provide, identifying the different attitudes, values and knowledge of the professionals involved. Methods: An exploratory, descriptive qualitative research conducted through 17 semi-structured interviews and 4 focal groups. The areas discussed are based on the QualityRightsassessment toolkit. After collecting the data, the contents of the narratives were analysed. Results: The respondents identified the lack of health care resources and social support, the predominant paternalism in the care provided and the prevailing biomedical approach as the main causes that erode the respect for human rights. In this context, an improvement in the professionals' training seems to be one of the potential solutions to address this issue. Conclusions: Analysing and doing research about the provision of human-rights-based care to individuals with mental health conditions in the institutional setting leads professionals to think about the care they provide. If this piece of research has managed to change attitudes, even minimally, it was worth doing it.

Participatory research (PR) is on the rise. In Spain, PR is scarce in the field of health, although there is an increasing interest in the matter. A comprehensive understanding of the meanings and practical implications of “public participation” is essential to promote participation in health research. The aim of the study is to explore the discursive positions on PR among individuals with experience in participatory processes in different areas and how this understanding translates into practice. We conducted a critical discourse analysis of 21 individuals with experience in PR and participatory processes (13 women, 8 men), mainly from the field of health and other areas of knowledge. Sixteen were Spanish and the rest were from the United Kingdom (3), United States (1), and Canada (1). Interviews were conducted in person or by telephone. The fieldwork was conducted between March 2019 and November 2019. The dominant discourses on public participation are situated along two axes situated on a continuum: the purpose of public participation and how power should be distributed in public participation processes. The first is instrumental public participation, which sees participatory research as a tool to improve research results and focuses on institutional interests and power-decision making is hold by researchers and institutions. The second, is transformative public participation, with a focus on social change and an equitable sharing of decision-making power between the public and researchers. All discursive positions stated that they do not carry out specific strategies to include the most socially disadvantaged individuals or groups. A shift in the scientific approach about knowledge, along with time and resources, are required to move towards a more balanced power distribution in the processes involving the public.

La asistencia personal es un servicio profesionalizado de apoyo a las personas para promocionar su autonomía personal, alcanzar una vida independiente y participar activamente en la comunidad. En este trabajo se analiza el impacto que tiene la asistencia personal en la inclusión social del colectivo de personas con problemas de salud mental. Para ello, se ha utilizado una metodología de índole cualitativa mediante una prospección bibliográfica, entrevistas individuales y grupos de discusión. La investigación revela los efectos inclusivos que tiene la asistencia personal para el colectivo tanto en la dimensión laboral como social: es un yacimiento de empleo, crea redes nuevas y potencia la participación en su entorno.
