VHE γ‐Ray Observation of the Crab Nebula and its Pulsar with the MAGIC Telescope

Abstract: We report about very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula with the MAGIC telescope. The gamma-ray flux from the nebula was measured between 60 GeV and 9 TeV. The energy spectrum is parameterized with a power low. The peak in the spectral energy distribution is estimated at (77 +/- 35) GeV. Within the observation time and the experimental resolution of the telescope, the gamma-ray emission is steady and pointlike. The emission's center of gravity coincides with the position of the pulsar.… Show more

“…The curvature seems to be smaller than reported in Albert et al (2008b), however the effective spectral slope is still within the systematic and statistical error. Note moreover, that the fitting range is slightly different than in Albert et al (2008b).…”

“…The second MAGIC telescope is a close copy of MAGIC I (Albert et al, 2008b) with a few important differences. Both telescopes have a 17 m diameter mirror dish and f /D close to 1, but contrary to MAGIC I, the outer mirrors of MAGIC II are made of glass rather than aluminium (Doro et al, 2008).…”

“…Upper limits (ULs) on the flux were computed following the Rolke et al (2005) method for 95% confidence level (CL), assuming a Gaussian background and a systematic uncertainty of 30% on the effective area of the instrument (Albert et al 2008). The spectrum that we assumed was a power-law function, dF/dE ∝ E −Γ , with a spectral index of 2.6.…”

“…before the second MAGIC telescope was operational (mono data), and in 2010 when both telescopes were already taking stereoscopic data. Details about the performance of MAGIC in mono and stereo mode can be found in Albert et al (2008) and Aleksić et al (2012). All data presented in this work were taken in the so-called wobble mode and were analyzed using the MARS analysis framework (Moralejo et al 2009;Aleksić et al 2012).…”
