Abstract: From a consideration of the Mindlin solution relating to the stresses produced by a subsurface point load in a semi-infinite, homogeneous, isotropic, linearly elastic medium, equations are developed for the intensity of vertical stress on the axis of loading caused by a number of axially symmetrical distributions of subsurface load.
