Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with low levels of lumbar strength in adolescents.Method: This was a cross-sectional study involving 601 adolescents, aged 14 to 17 years, enrolled in public schools in the western region of Santa catarina State -Southern Brazil. Lumbar strength was analyzed by the lumbar extension test developed by the canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, which proposes different cutoffs for boys and girls. Independent variables were sex, age, socioeconomic status, dietary habits, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and aerobic fitness. For data analysis, univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used, with significance level of 5%. Results: The prevalence of low levels of lumbar strength was 27.3%. The population subgroups most likely to present low levels of lumbar strength were females (OR: 1.54, 95% cI : 1.06 to 2.23), adolescents with low levels of aerobic fitness (OR: 2.10, 95% cI: 1.41 to 3.11) and the overweight (OR: 2.28, 95% cI: 1.35 to 3.81). Conclusion: Almost one-third of the studied students have low levels of lumbar strength. Interventions in the school population should be taken with special attention to female adolescents, those with low levels of aerobic fitness, and those with overweight, as these population subgroups were most likely to demostrate low levels of lumbar strength.

Individual and collective empowerment and associated factors among Brazilian adults: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundThe empowerment embedded in the health area is defined as a process that can facilitate control over the determinants of health of individuals and population as a way to improve health. The aim of this study was to verify the association between individual and collective empowerment with sociodemographic conditions, lifestyle, health conditions and quality of life.MethodA cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 1150 individuals (aged 35 to 44 years). The empowerment was determined by questions from the Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital (IQ-MSC). The quality of life was measured using the WHOQOL (World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref). Lifestyle and health conditions were obtained by adapted questions from the Fantastic Lifestyle Questionnaire The DMFT Index was incorporated in the health conditions questions. Logistic regression or multinomial regression was performed.ResultsThe practice of physical activity was related to individual (OR: 2.70) and collective (OR: 1.57) empowerment. Regarding individual empowerment, people with higher education level (5–11 years – OR: 3.46 and ≥12 years – OR: 4.41), who felt more able to deal with stress (OR:3.76), who presented a high score on quality of life (psychological domain) (OR:1.23) and that smoked (OR:1.49) were more likely to feel able to make decisions and participate in community activities. The increase in the DMFT Index represented less chance of individuals to feel more able to make decisions (OR: 0.96). Regarding the collective empowerment, being religious (catholic) (OR: 1.82), do not drink or drink just a little (OR: 1.66 and 2.28, respectively), and increased score of overall quality of life (OR: 1.08) were more likely to report that people cooperate to solve a problem in their community.ConclusionThe two approaches to empowerment, the individual and collective are connected, and the physical activity showed to be a good strategy for the empowerment construction.

Introduction: There seems to be an association between unhealthy lifestyles and reduced practice of physical activity as well as decreased cognitive function and academic performance of students. Objective: To investigate the association between lifestyle, physical activity and academic coefficient of undergraduate nursing students from the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Material and methods: This was a crosssectional, descriptive and correlational study including 51 nursing students, with a mean age of 23.0±0.23 years, mean body mass index of 23.77±3.96 kg/m², and height of 1.64±0.08 m. The data were collected using a socio-demographic questionnaire, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-IPAQ (short version), and the Fantastic Lifestyle Questionnaire. The data were analyzed descriptively and using Mann-Whitney test, Spearman correlation and ChiSquare test. Results: The students showed adequate lifestyle (92.15%), being classified as physically active (74.50%), with an average academic coefficient of 7.86±0.58 points. High academic coefficient was associated with high levels of physical activity and correlated with balanced diet habits, safe sex and use of seat belts. Conclusions: The level of physical activity may be an important factor for the development of a healthy lifestyle and good academic performance at university. DESCRIPTORS
