“…The often conspicuous presence of spores of coprophilous fungi in peat and lake sediments is usually explained by concomitant influx of dung of large herbivores, wild or domesticated (Pals et al 1980, Van Geel et al 1981, 1983, Witte 6r Van Geel 1985, Davis et al 1977, 1984.…”

“…The complement of spores recovered from lake and peat sediments is, in general, limited in number and diversity, and rather constant in composition as far as the representative morphological spore-types or even taxa are concerned. This no longer surprises (Wolf 19660) in the light of evidence that spores in lake sediments are derived from fungi associated with local, lake-side rather than regional vegetation (Wolf 19676, 1967c;Witte & Van Geel 1985), and that those in peats largely represent fungi growing on peat bog vegetation as saprobes or weak parasites ( Van Geel 1978). Dcspite all appearances, the spores of most fungi do not blow around in the wind but rather depend on less haphazard agencies of dispersal.…”

“…According to a palaeoecological study of pollen and peat deposits, the swamps of the Dutch coastal region were dominated by P. australis from around 4500 BP until approximately 800 BP, when the area became less eutrophic (Witte and van Geel 1985).…”
