“…Limited (Colvocoresses, Lynch, and Webb, 1974) and such observations seem compatible with data indicating that the sodium transport system ultimately establishes the blood osmolality (Shaw, 1960). By day 9 after direct transfers, blood sodium/ chloride ratios in C. jauiaicensc are higher at 3 ( /< f than at 37 r /c salinity.…”

“…These results are in accord with Gerald & Gilles (1973), although the medium potassium concentration that they used never exceeded 10 mM. In high salinity waters, Gifford (1962), Colvocoresses et al (1974) and Findley & Stickle (1978) found lower potassium concentration in the hemolymph than the medium.…”

“…Such a pattern of chloride regulation has Sal ini ty (0/00) been observed previously (Odum, 1953;Gerald & Gilles, 1972;Findley & Stickle, 1978). Sodium and chloride concentrations determined in the present study are within the range of published data on animals collected in the field without prior acclimation (Gifford, 1962;Colvocoresses et al, 1974).…”

“…A-5 and 6). The levels of these two cations are within the range reported in field study by Colvocoresses et al (1974), who also showed hyperionic magnesium regulation below 6-8 0100 S, which is beyond the range of the present study. It is noted that serum magnesium concentration in C. sapidus was usually less than 50% of that in the medium.…”

“…In animals acclimated to 865 m-osmol (426 mM-Na + and 489 mM-Cl~) the blood Na + concentration was 443 ± 2 mM and Cl~ was 449 ± 4 mM. The Na + values are similar to those reported by Colvocoresses, Lynch & Webb (1974) for acute measurements on blue crabs taken from similar salinities (415 and 364 mM-Na+ at 870 and 270 m-osmol, respectively). Our Cl~ concentrations were higher at the high salinity (449 v. 368 mM) but agree for crabs at approximately the same low salinity (338 v. 327 mM).…”
