Value of Whole-Body Turbo Short Tau Inversion Recovery Magnetic Resonance Imaging With Panoramic Table For Detecting Bone Metastases

Abstract: Whole-body turbo STIR MRI is a reliable method for screening patients with suspected skeletal metastases. This technique is also advantageous in that it reveals extraskeletal organ and soft tissue metastases.

“…Many recent studies report an excellent correlation between BS and WB-MRI, although lesions in ribs, scapulae or skull may be better detected by BS, whereas additional metastases have been identified in the spine, pelvis and femur by WB-MRI [27,28]. These data, in agreement with our own findings, support the higher detection rate of WB-MRI because of the wider range of detectable lesions in terms of both anatomical location and biological behaviour.…”

“…With its lack of ionizing radiation and excellent soft tissue contrast, MRI has become a promising candidate for whole-body bone marrow screening. Several reports have shown whole-body MRI to be highly sensitive and accurate for the evaluation of metastasis (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). The combination of noncontrasted T1-weighted spinecho (SE) sequences and fat-suppressed short tau inversion recovery (STIR) imaging proved to be the most accurate in the detection of malignant bone marrow disorders and an excellent negative and positive predictive value, especially for STIR imaging, has been described in the literature (8,9,(14)(15)(16).…”

“…Thus, the search of metastatic disease in patients is important for long-term prognosis. The power of WB-MR for the detection of metastasis has been demonstrated in a handful of recent reports using T 1 -STIR or T 2 -weighted imaging sequences(17,28-32,37,40,85). For example, Lauenstein et al (78) investigated the use of whole-body imaging using various T 1 and T 2 sequences compared to bone scans.…”
