Validity and Reproducibility of a Semiquantitative Multiple-Choice Food Frequency Questionnaire in Iranian Adults

Abstract: Previous multiple-choice food-based food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) were not validated against weighed dietary records (WDRs) in Iran. This study investigated the validity and reproducibility of a multiple-choice semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) in adults living in central Iran. Patients with diabetes and their spouses were asked to complete 3 SQ-FFQs by interview, and nine 3-day WDRs, over 9 months. They provided 2 blood samples to assess serum calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin … Show more

“…The usual diet information of patients was obtained through face-to-face interviews using a 168-item validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) specifically designed based on commonly consumed Iranian foods. Detailed information about the design, food items, and validity of this questionnaire is described elsewhere [ 30 , 31 ]. Briefly, the questionnaire recorded the amount and frequency of consumption of each food item during the preceding year on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.…”

“…For each food item, participants were asked by trained interviewers to report the frequency of food item intake during the past year by answering 10-multiple-choice frequency responses ranging from “never or less than once a month” to “10 or more times per day”. In addition, FFQ had five choices for portion size for estimation of the amount of each consumed food item 57 . Dietary intake information was collected by a semi-quantitative open-ended FFQ based on 134-items in the Shahedieh study.…”

“…Dietary intake was evaluated through the semi‐quantitative FFQ by trained interviewers. The original semi‐quantitative FFQ, which was previously validated for the Iranian population, has 168 items, but 10 more questions on the consumption of Yazd‐specific frequently consumed food items were added, which made a total of 178 food items (Zimorovat et al, 2022 ). Participants were asked to report the amount and frequency of consuming each food item each month, week, or day during the past year.…”
