Validity and reliability of a Malay version of the Lawton instrumental activities of daily living scale among the Malay speaking elderly in Malaysia

Abstract: The result shows that the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale - Malay Version has excellent reliability and validity for use with the Malay speaking elderly people in Malaysia. This scale could be used by professionals to assess functional ability of elderly who live independently in community.

“…The validated Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL)-Malay Version (Lawton IADL-MV) was used to assess functional ability within this study [15]. Lawton IADL assessed the instrumental activities of daily living, which require greater complexity of the neurophysical functions.…”

“…Such instruments that included GERDQ and QOLRAD are both widely used, cost-effective, and easy to apply in practice [17]. Since language and cultural differences can affect symptoms perception of GERD, both instruments have been translated into many languages except for the Malay language, the fourth most widely used language in the world [18]. To diagnose GERD, a cut-off score was determined from GERDQ-M against the reference diagnostic criteria based by Jonasson et al [14] Using the ROC analysis, our population cut-off score for a high probability of GERD was ≥8 and this score has a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 77%.…”

“…The scores are computed, and the total scores range from 0 (total independence in all 7 domains) to 28 (total dependence in all 7 domains). The IADL is a reliable, valid, and widely used scale for measuring the IADLs in the elderly population, 27,28 with a summary score ranging from 0 to 8 for women and 0 to 5 for men to avoid potential bias. In women, a score of 0 means low function (dependent), and a score of 8 means a high function or independent.…”
