Resumen AbstractDespite the availability of data about drinking frequency and patterns, the surveys on alcohol use among adolescents carried out in Europe tend not to provide information about diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorders (AUD) or estimation of their prevalence. This study assesses the prevalence of AUD among a sample of Spanish adolescents, to identify the most prevalent symptoms, and explore gender differences in AUD in this population. The final sample consisted of 504 participants aged 15 to 18, obtained by means of random sampling from all the schools in the region of Asturias (Spain). The presence of alcohol abuse (AA) and alcohol dependence (AD) disorders was evaluated according to DSM-IV-TR criteria. The results showed that 12.5% of the sample met the criteria for the diagnosis of AUD (6.7% for alcohol abuse, AA, and 5.8% for alcohol dependence, AD). The most prevalent symptoms were having social problems for AA diagnosis (9% of students who reported alcohol use in the past year) and tolerance for AD diagnosis (45.8% of students who reported alcohol use in the past year). Males showed a significantly higher score than females in AUD, AA and two AA diagnosis criteria (hazardous use and legal problems). The prevalence of AUD among Spanish adolescents is very high, males being more likely than females to endorse criteria for AUD and AA, though not for AD. These findings reveal a serious health issue and highlight the need to develop preventive efforts and provide coordinated alcohol-abuse interventions.Key words: adolescents, alcohol use disorders, alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, gender differences.Las encuestas sobre el uso de alcohol en los adolescentes en Europa no suelen proporcionar información sobre los criterios para el diagnóstico de trastornos por uso alcohol (TUA) o la prevalencia de dichos trastornos.En este estudio se valora la prevalencia de TUA en una muestra de adolescentes españoles, y se identifican los síntomas más prevalentes, así como las diferencias de género en TUA en esta población. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 504 participantes de entre 15 y 18 años. Se realizó un muestreo al azar de todas las escuelas del Principado de Asturias (España).La presencia de abuso de alcohol (AA) y la dependencia del alcohol (DA) fue evaluada según el DSM-IV-TR. Los resultados mostraron que el 12,5% de la muestra cumplía criterios para el diagnóstico de TUA (6,7% AA y 5,8% DA). Los síntomas más frecuentes fueron tener problemas sociales para el diagnóstico de AA (9% de los participantes que habían bebido en el último año) y tolerancia para el diagnóstico de DA (45,8% de los participantes que habían bebido en el último año). Background/Aims: Despite cannabis use among adolescents has shown to be related to psychosocial and mental health problems, the demand from adolescents for professional help is very low, and determinants of motivation for change among nonclinical populations remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess motivation for change among young cannabis users and to identify determinants of intention to change and self-change, as well as perceived barriers to seeking professional help. Methods: 261 cannabis users aged 16–21 participated in a computerized survey in Spain. Results: Data from this cross-sectional study indicated that few users intend to stop taking the drug. Determining factors of intention to change were the following: having more drug-related problems, paranoid symptomatology and greater concern about the consequences of use. Self-change was facilitated by lower use of cannabis, and could be hindered by tobacco smoking and cannabis dependence. Lack of awareness of the problems and the desire to solve one’s problems alone constitute the main barriers to seeking professional help. Conclusions: Adolescent cannabis users show low motivation for change though experiencing more problems associated with its use emerges as a determinant of increased motivation. Several barriers impede this motivation from turning into treatment demand.

Resumen: Las experiencias esquizotípicas son consideradas como la expresión conductual de vulnerabilidad latente a los trastornos del espectro esquizofrénico. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar la calidad psicométrica del Schizotypal Personality Questionnarie-Child (SPQ-C) en adolescentes no clínicos. La muestra final la formaron un total de 508 participantes, 208 varones, con una media de edad de 13.9 años (DT = 1.7). Los resultados mostraron que las experiencias esquizotípicas son comunes entre la población adolescente. Los modelos dimensionales hipotetizados sometidos a prueba, mediante análisis factorial confirmatorio, indicaron que el modelo tridimensional fue el que mejores índices de ajuste presentó en comparación con los modelos competentes. El coeficiente alfa de Cronbach para la puntuación total del SPQ-C fue .90. Las dimensiones del SPQ-C mostraron correlaciones estadísticamente significativas con otros autoinformes que valoraban sintomatología emocional y comportamental y estrés percibido. Ningún elemento del SPQ-C mostró funcionamiento diferencial del ítem para el factor sexo. El SPQ-C presentó un adecuado comportamiento psicométrico en esta muestra. Asimismo, la esquizotipia es un constructo de naturaleza multidimensional que puede ser evaluado de forma precisa en población adolescente con la finalidad de mejorar las estrategias de detección temprana en el campo de los trastornos mentales graves. The main goal was to analyze the psychometric quality of Schizotypal Personality Questionnarie-Child (SPQ-C) in non-clinical adolescents. The final sample was comprised of a total of 508 participants, 208 were male, with a mean age of 13.9 years (SD = 1.7). The results showed that schizotypal traits are common among adolescents. Hypothesized dimensional models tested by confirmatory factor analysis, indicated the three-dimensional model was the best fit indices presented in comparison with competing models. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the total score was .90. The dimensions of the SPQ-C showed significant correlations with self-reports that assessed emotional and behavioral problems and perceived stress. No items on SPQ-C showed differential item functioning by gender. The SPQ-C scores showed adequate psychometric properties. Also, schizotypy is a multidimensional construct that can be accurately assessed in adolescents in order to improve early detection strategies in the field of severe mental disorders.
