Background. The prolapse quality-of-life questionnaire (P-QOL) has been validated and translated into eight languages. The lack of an Afrikaans version of the P-QOL limits studies in Afrikaans-speaking patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Objective. To validate an Afrikaans version of the P-QOL in a South African population. Methods. The P-QOL was translated into Afrikaans by a medical translator and three gynaecologists. This descriptive study determined construct validity comparing 25 symptomatic (64.1%, n=39) and 14 asymptomatic (35.9%, n=39) participants' median domain scores. The POP stage was determined according to the POP quantification (POP-Q) scale and compared with their domain scores by means of percentages. A second P-QOL was completed and the stability determined by the test-retest method. The Cronbach alpha was used to determine internal consistency and the kappa value to determine measure of agreement. Results. Symptomatic participants had higher median domain scores than asymptomatic participants. All asymptomatic participants had stage 0 POP and 33.3% of symptomatic participants had stage III POP. Stability was good, with an average of above 50%. The mean Cronbach alpha value was 0.94 and the kappa value indicated moderate to good strength of agreement between items (к=0.41 -0.80). Conclusion. The Afrikaans P-QOL was found to be valid and reliable to determine quality of life in women with POP, correlating with the findings of other validation studies and supporting the evidence that the P-QOL is a high-quality disease-specific quality-of-life questionnaire.

The patients were randomized into 2 groups using a computer program, and underwent either Manchester procedure (Group 1) or vaginal hysterectomy (Group 2). Both groups were compared in terms of durations of the operations, the length of hospital stay, quality of life (QoL) scores and the recurrences (C point and total vaginal length) at 5 years after operations. R Re es su ul lt ts s: : Manchester procedure was performed on 49 patients. Vaginal hysterectomy was performed on 45 patients. The mean duration of operation and the length of hospitalization for group 1 and group 2 were 62.4±10.5 minutes and 2.58±0,56 days, and 77.8±13.6 minutes and 2.88±0.63 days, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between groups in terms of the durations of operations (p=0.003) and the length of stay in hospital after the interventions (p=0.042). The postoperative mean of the C point level in group 1 and group 2 were -6.3±0.91 cm and -6±0.97 cm, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.132). The postoperative mean of total vaginal length in groups 1 and 2 were 8,3±0.95 cm and 6.02±0.98 cm, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.016). Objective: There is little epidemiological data regarding pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in Japan, despite it being recognized as a disease can be treated in the outpatient or inpatient settings. Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of symptomatic POP among Japanese women. Methods:This cross-sectional study evaluated 8,407 randomly selected women (20-90 years old) who were employed at the Japanese Agriculture Group. Trained research assistants distributed a Japanese self-administered questionnaire that was specifically designed for this study. The participants were asked to provide information regarding their demographic characteristics and symptoms of POP or urinary incontinence (UI). The potential risk factors included age, body mass index, self-reported conditions or comorbid diseases, parity, heavy lifting at work, perceived health status, and occupation. Results:The weighted prevalence of POP was 5.64% (95% Cl: 5.15-6.13%), the prevalence of UI was 44.25% (95% CI: 43.19-45.31%), and at least one pelvic floor disorder was reported by 46.15% of the women (95% Cl: 45.09-47.22%). The proportion of women who reported having symptomatic POP generally increased with age and peaked at the age of 70-79 years (20-29 years old: 0.86%, 30-39 years old: 3.45%, 40-49 years old: 3.59%, 50-59 years old: 5.79%, 60-69 years old: 6.12%, 70-79 years old: 6.27%, and ≥80 years old: 5.37%; p<0.001). Conclusion:The present study provided the first population-based estimate of the prevalence of POP among Japanese women. The prevalence of symptomatic POP increased with age and peaked at 70-79 years. Approximately half of adult Japanese women reported experiencing symptoms of at least one pelvic floor disorder (POP and/or UI).
