Abstract: Introduction: The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) (2012) is a brief cognitive battery that assesses five sub-domains of cognition (attention and orientation, memory, verbal fluency, language, and visuospatial abilities) which are commonly impaired in dementia. Objective: We aimed to validate the Egyptian-Arabic ACE-III in dementia patients, and to provide cutoff scores for the ACE-III in diagnosing dementia in Egyptian-Arabic speakers. Methods: We included 37 patients with dementia (Alzheimer… Show more

“…Compared to the previous validation of the Arabic ACE-III in dementia, sensitivity and specificity for the optimal cut-off in MCI were lower (75% sensitivity and 82% specificity) compared to dementia (89% sensitivity and 95% specificity) [21]. This was the case with all the other language versions of the ACE-III that generally showed lower sensitivity and specificity when validated in MCI patients than in dementia subjects [6-12].…”

“…When we compared ACE-III performance between the MCI and control groups, we found a statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in total score, memory, fluency, and visuospatial ability but not in attention and language. The control group performed better on all domains, but performance did not reach the threshold for impairment in either group according to previously established cut-offs in Arabic [21], except on memory tasks in MCI subjects. This is consistent with the original definition of MCI which requires normal general cognitive function with objective impairment in one cognitive domain in the absence of dementia [1].…”

“…English versions of the ACE-III have also been adapted for the UK and the United States of America (USA). However, the ACE-III was originally designed for English speakers native to Australia, with a reliance on knowledge of the cultural background [ 15 ] and although cultural adaptation has been undertaken by adaptors to produce suitable adaptations [ 36 – 38 ] there are no existing standardised guidelines for the cultural adaptation of this cognitive test.…”
