Atmospheric water vapor (AWV) was investigated for the first time in the Chinese Bohai Sea using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver aboard a lightweight (300-ton) ship. An experiment was conducted to retrieve the AWV using the state-of-the-art GPS precise point positioning (PPP) technique. The effects of atmospheric weighted mean temperature model and zenith wet delay constraint on GPS AWV estimates were discussed in the PPP estimation system. The GPS-derived precipitable water vapor (PWV) and slant-path water vapor (SWV) were assessed by comparing with those derived from the Fifth Generation NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale Model (MM5). The results showed the PWV and SWV differences between those derived from both GPS and MM5 are 1.5 mm root mean square (RMS) with a bias of 0.2 and 3.9 mm RMS with a bias of -0.7 mm respectively. These good agreements indicate that the GPS-derived AWV in dynamic environments has a comparable accuracy with that of the MM5 model. This suggests that high accuracy and high spatio-temporal resolution humidity fields can be obtained using GPS in the Chinese Bohai Sea, which offers significant potential for meteorological applications and climate studies in this region.

Abstract. Atmospheric sounding using the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is a well-established research field in Europe. At present, GNSS data from 1800 stations are available for model validation and assimilation in stateof-the-art models used for operational numerical weather prediction centres in Europe. Advances in GNSS data processing make it possible also to use the GNSS data for climatic trend analysis, an emerging new application. In Bulgaria and southeastern Europe, the use of GNSS for atmospheric sounding is currently under development.As a first step, the Sofia University Atmospheric Data Archive (SUADA) is developed. SUADA is a user-friendly database, and includes GNSS tropospheric products like zenith total delay (ZTD) and derivatives like vertically integrated water vapour (IWV), as well as observations from radiosonde (RS) and surface atmospheric data. Archived in SUADA are (1) GNSS tropospheric products (over 12 000 000 individual observations) and derivatives (over 55 000) from five GNSS processing strategies and 37 stations for the period 1997-2013, with temporal resolutions from 5 min to 6 h, and (2) radiosonde IWV data (over 6000 observations) for station Sofia (1999Sofia ( -2012.Presented are two applications of the SUADA data for the study of long-and short-term variations of IWV over Bulgaria during the 2007 heatwave and intense precipitation events in 2012.

For improved water resource management and forecasting of risks associated with hydrological processes, it is fundamental to improve the knowledge of rainfall as a natural process. Atmospheric water vapour content is one of the key variables in precipitation. The distribution and evolution of atmospheric water vapour is critical for the functioning of hydrological processes, being one of the essential climate variables as defined in the Global Climate Observing System. Improving understanding of atmospheric water vapour content and distribution is essential for climate change studies because water vapour is the main greenhouse gas, contributing around 70% of global temperature rise (Solomon et al., 2007). Water vapour is also a major component in controlling atmospheric stability, because it is involved actively in the evolution and propagation of convective storm systems. Until recently, atmospheric water vapour could not be observed particularly well due to the absence of instruments capable of measuring it at high‐resolution temporal and spatial scales. However, in recent years the increase in the number of permanent GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) reference stations worldwide has led to a major breakthrough in the monitoring of atmospheric integrated water vapour (IWV), with almost 2000 sites in Europe alone contributing near real‐time atmospheric delay estimates. The present study focuses on the relationship between variations in IWV observed using delays in GNSS signals with meteorological variables such as atmospheric pressure and precipitation, in a long‐term study for the period 2000–2012 in the area of Valencia, Spain. Fluctuations in IWV fields correlate well with approaching frontal rainfall, and a combined rise in IWV and fall in atmospheric pressure act together as a precursor to heavy precipitation.
