Validation of a care protocol for the septic patient in the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: Objective: to elaborate and validate a protocol for the care of the nurse to the septic patient in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Method: instrument validation study. Two steps were followed: instrument development and content validation according to the Delphi technique. Results: the validation of contents related to the nurse's assistance to the septic patient in intensive care was initially composed of eighteen items analyzed by the evaluators/judges. From this, through the Content Validity Index (CVI), thirt… Show more

“…Selection of participants mostly took into account criteria for title, experience and knowledge on the subject under study, in addition to studies in the field. Six studies made a selection based on the search for curricula in the Lattes Platform (4,6,13,(25)(26)(27) . three used scoring systems for curriculum assessment (4,6,13) ; three used snowball sampling (16,(28)(29) , in which one participant indicates the next; and the others did not detail the form of selection, only the inclusion and exclusion criteria.…”

“…From the perspective of sepsis, nurses also initiate a package of measures that comprise lactate dosage; culture collection; venous access; preparation and optimized administration of broad spectrum antimicrobials; volume replacement and evaluation of static or dynamic hemodynamic variables; vasopressor and/or inotropic therapy; installation of intra-arterial catheter and monitoring of the invasive pressure; identification and control of the infectious focus; administration of blood components and alert for transfusion reactions; ventilatory support; glycemic control; early nutrition; reassessment of the volemic and perfusion status; and monitoring of lactate clearance; among other adjuvant measures. 8,[32][33][34][35] In view of this, it is expected that the present study can contribute to the improvement of the skills of the intensive care nurses when caring for the patient with COVID-19 and sepsis, boosting their work process as they identify human needs and nursing phenomena to enhance the prognosis of these critically ill patients in the ICU. Finally, due to the fact that the world is dealing with a new and threatening disease, it is indispensable that, in future research studies, outcome indicators are used that can evidence the association between the nursing diagnoses, the nursing care actions, and the outcomes presented by these patients.…”
