An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of different sorghum varieties on the blood parameters and carcass measurements of cross-bred (Dutch x New Zealand) growing rabbits aged between five and seven weeks. Twenty five rabbits were randomly allocated to five dietary treatments; T1 (100% maize), T2 (50% maize and 50% "Chakalare" sorghum), T3 (100% Chakalare" sorghum), T4 (50% maize and 50% "Jigare" sorghum) and T5 (100% "Jigare" sorghum). The "Chakalare" and "Jigare" are low-tannin and high-tannin sorghum varieties respectively. The haematological parameters were Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Haemoglobin (Hb), Red Blood Cell (RBC), White Blood Cell (WBC), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), Monocytes (%) basophils (%), Neutrophils (%), Eosinophils (%) and Lymphocytes (%). The carcass parameters were Slaughter weight (g), Dressed weight (g), Dressing percentage %, (As % of slaughter weight) of Shoulder/forelegs, Rack, Loin, Thighs/Hind legs, Skin/pelt, Tail, Head, Feet, Heart Liver, Lungs, Kidneys, Kidneys Caecum, Stomach, Large intestine, Small intestine, Caecum length (cm), Stomach length (cm), Small intestine length (cm) and Body length (cm). The response showed that most of the haematological parameters were significantly affected (P<0.05) by the different varieties of sorghum in the diets except packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and basophils which were not significantly affected (P>0.05) by the different varieties of sorghum in the diets. However, most of the haematological values fell within the normal ranges PCV (37.33 to 40.67 %), Hb (13.37-156.73 %), RBC (5.57-6.93%) and ) of growing rabbits. The carcass measurements and organs expressed as percentage of slaughter weight were not significantly (P>0.05) different among the treatment groups except slaughter weight, dressing percentage, rack, loin, liver, caecum weight and stomach length which were significantly (P<0.05) different. The study indicated that the two varieties of sorghum ("Chakalare" and "Jigare") can be included in the diets of growing rabbits as replacement for maize without adverse effect on haematology and carcass parameters of growing rabbits.

The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of urea-fortified concentrate corncob diets on growth performance and carcass characteristics of West African dwarf (WAD) goats. Fifteen WAD goats with an average weight of 9.33 kg were studied. The animals were weighted and randomly assigned to five (5) treatments in a completely randomized design (CRD). The treatments were of different levels i.e. 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% of urea in corncob-based concentrate diets. Results showed variation (P<0.05) in the live weight among all the treatments while no effect was observed in average daily weight gain, average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio, carcass and non-carcass characteristics among the treatment groups. However, the physicochemical properties of the meat showed that meat water holding capacity, moisture, dry matter, crude fibre and ash were not influenced by urea but there was a significant (P<0.05) difference in meat pH and meat crude protein among the treated groups. In conclusion, for better performance in the live weight gain of WAD goats, 3% best level inclusion of urea fortified corncob diet should be taken into cognizance.The meat pH in this study ranged from 5.90 to 6.45. If glycogen declines pre-slaughter, pH decreases. It cannot increase. Of course, Lactate is the main product while comparisons reported by Varnam and Sutherland (1995) showed that a pH of 5.5 is desirable and is associated with light colored palatable meat. However, if pre-mortem glycogen reserves are low (<0.65 to 0.70%), the result is a high pH meat, which at extreme levels, can cause an aesthetically unpleasant phenomenon of dark, firm and dry meat (Brown et al., 1990). Such meat is dark in color, tough, has a high water holding capacity and is prone to bacterial spoilage. The pH of the meat declines too quickly after slaughter and a pale, soft, exudative condition may develop.The results obtained in this study showed that moisture content was similar with reports by Gopalanet al. (1980) with an average meat moisture content of 74.2% while protein (21.4%) and fat (3.6%)were relatively low because they were expressed on dry matter basis. CONCLUSIONThe utilization of the urea treated crop residues has no deleterious effects on the growth performance,carcass and non-carcass characteristics, meat physicochemical properties of the WAD goats. It is therefore, recommended to use goat producers as dry season feedstuffs. It is further recommended that 3% level of inclusion of urea fortified corncob diet could be fed and will give better growth performance in WAD goats 6. ACKNOWLEDGEMNENTS

A ten-weeks feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect of replacing groundnut cake (GNC) with cooked Bambara nut meal (CBNM) on the performance of growing rabbits. Thirty mixed breed (New Zealand White X Dutch) of rabbits six to seven weeks of age with initial body weight of 604.50 g were caged individually and allotted to five(5) dietary treatments. Each treatment had six ( 6) replications. The rabbits were given diets and clean drinking water ad libitum throughout the period of experiment. In diets 1(control ), 2, 3, 4 and 5 CBNM replaced GNC at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, respectively. The parameters determined were nutrients digestibility and carcass components. All data collected in the course of the experiment were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) using the completely randomized design (Steel and Torrie, 1980) and where applicable Duncan's multiple range test, was used for mean separation.There were no significant differences (P>0.05) among treatment groups in terms of nutrient digestibility except for Nitrogen-free extract (NFE). There were no significant difference (P>0.05) among treatment groups for all carcass parameters measured except for the dressed weight, dressing percentage; and racks expressed as percentage of slaughter weight. The retail cuts as percentage of slaughter weight differ significantly (P<0.05) for racks while the shoulder, loins and thighs did not differ (P>0.05) among treatment groups.
