The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of including common-bean residue in diets for feedlot sheep on the intake and digestibility of nutrients by these animals. Sixteen intact male sheep were allotted in a completely randomized design with four treatments and four replicates. Treatments consisted of the inclusion of 0, 11, 22, and 33% of the common-bean residue (dry matter basis) in the experimental diets, which corresponded to the substitution levels of 0.0, 33.3, 66.7, and 100.0% of cottonseed cake for the bean residue. Data of the studied variables were subjected to analyses of variance and regression, adopting a significance level of 5%. The model was chosen based on the significance of the regression parameters, evaluated by the t test (P<0.05), and on the coefficients of determination. The levels of inclusion of the common-bean residue in the diet influenced (P<0.05) the intakes of dry matter (DM), crude protein, organic matter, ether extract, and indigestible neutral detergent fiber, expressed in g animal -1 day -1 , percentage of body weight (%BW), and metabolic weight (BW 0.75 ), which decreased linearly. However, the inclusion of the different levels of common-bean residue did not change (P>0.05) the intakes of neutral detergent fiber, non-fiber carbohydrates, or total digestible nutrients by the feedlot sheep. Every 1.0% of inclusion of the common-bean residue in the sheep diet led to a reduction of 4.93, 0.01, and 0.20 in DM intake when expressed in g animal -1 day -1 , %BW, and BW 0.75 , respectively. Every 1.0% of inclusion of the bean residue resulted in the reduction of 2.73% in the intake of indigestible neutral detergent fiber by the feedlot sheep. Sheep displayed a linear increase (P<0.05) in water intake with the levels of common-bean residue in the experimental diets. The inclusion of 0, 11, 22, and 33% of the residue in the diet caused the digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber to increase linearly (P<0.05). It is concluded that the inclusion of up to 22% of commonbean residue in diets for feedlot sheep provides balanced and adequate values between the intake and digestibility of nutrients. ResumoObjetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão do resíduo de feijão na dieta de ovinos confinados sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade dos nutrientes. Foram utilizados 16 ovinos, machos inteiros, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos pela inclusão de 0; 11; 22 e 33% na MS do resíduo de feijão nas dietas experimentais, as quais corresponderam aos níveis de substituição de 0,0; 33,3; 66,7 e 100,0% da torta de algodão pelo resíduo de feijão. RESUMO -A pesquisa foi realizada para avaliar o desempenho, a digestibilidade e o balanço de nitrogênio e analisar a viabilidade econômica da inclusão de polpa de caju desidratada na alimentação de ovinos em confinamento. Foram utilizados 20 ovinos machos mestiços da raça Santa Inês em confinamento, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualisados, com cinco tratamentos (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40% de polpa de caju desidratada -PCD) e quatro repetições. As dietas, isoprotéicas, foram compostas de feno de tifton -85 moído (Cynodon spp.) como volumoso e concentrado formulado com milho, farelo de soja, polpa de caju desidratada e sal mineral. Os níveis de polpa de caju desidratada na dieta não interferiram no consumo de MS e PB (g/dia) e na conversão alimentar. O consumo de FDN elevou e o ganho de peso diminuiu com o aumento da inclusão da polpa de caju desidratada na dieta. Para ganho médio diário, a polpa de caju desidratada pode ser incluída em proporções de até 30% (nível que proporcionou o melhor retorno econômico). A inclusão de polpa de caju desidratada em rações para ovinos na fase de terminação reduziu a retenção de nitrogênio e afetou negativamente a digestibilidade dos nutrientes (MS, PB, FDN e FDA).Palavras-chave: alimentos alternativos, conversão alimentar, ganho de peso Effects of feeding dried cashew pulp on performance, digestibility and nitrogen balance in sheep ABSTRACT -Twenty crossbred male Santa Inês sheep were assigned to a completely randomized block design to evaluate the effects of feeding dried cashew pulp (DCP) on performance, digestibility of nutrients, and nitrogen balance. It was also of particular interest to study the economical viability of adding DCP to diets of feedlot sheep. Diets were isonitrogenous and contained ground Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp), corn, soybean meal, salt, and one of the following levels of DCP: 0, 10, 20, 30 or 40%. Increasing the dietary levels of DCP had no significant effect on intakes of DM and CP and also on feed conversion. Neutral detergent fiber intake was increased while an opposite effect was observed for weight gain by adding DCP to the diets. For average daily weight gain is recommended the inclusion of 30% of DCP in the diet because of the greatest economical return rate. This study evaluated the clinical effects of two different amounts of melon, with a high sugar content, suddenly offered to unadapted sheep. Twelve rumem cannulated crossbred 8-months-old sheep , weighing 25 kg each, were used. These sheep had never been fed with food concentrated with sugar or fruits. The animals were kept in collective pens with a basal diet of roughage and then randomly divided into two equal groups. The sheep in the two groups received 25% and 75% of dry matter (DM) of the diet the crushed melon, administered by the rumen cannula. Physical examination and measurement of rumen fluid pH was performed at the following times: 0, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h. The animals of G25% did not present clinical signs despite subacute acidosis expected after administration of the melon. However, in the G75%, sheep developed clinical manifestation indicative of lactic acidosis with rumen fluid pH lower than 5.0 from T6h, but did not present with dehydration. In sheep from G75 %, tachycardia was observed at 3 h and continued until the end of the study; tachypnea was also observed at 3 h, which was caused by increased abdominal circumference. Based on the results obtained, the supplementation of high amounts of melon (75% DM) in the diet is not recommended for sheep, although the use of 25% DM is safe. However, greater amounts of this fruit could be used in the diet of sheep with gradual adaptation to the substrate. utilizados 12 ovinos canulados, mestiços da raça Santa Inês, machos, pesando 25 kg, com oito meses de idade e que nunca haviam recebido rações concentradas, frutas ou raízes. Os animais foram mantidos em baias coletivas com dieta basal composta de volumoso e distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos iguais que receberam, subitamente, quantidades de melão triturado correspondentes a 25 e 75% da matéria seca (MS) da dieta, administradas pela cânula ruminal. Foi realizado exame físico e mensuração do pH do fluido ruminal nos seguintes momentos: zero, 3, 6, 12, 18 e 24 h. Os animais do G25% não manifestaram sintomatologia clínica, apesar da acidose subaguda esperada após a administração de melão. Os animais do G75% desenvolveram quadro clínico indicativo de acidose láctica ruminal, com pH deste fluido inferior a 5,0 a partir do T6h, mas sem apresentar desidratação. Nos ovinos do G75% foi observada taquicardia a partir do momento 3 horas até o final do estudo e discreta taquipnéia no momento 3 horas, causadas pelo aumento da circunferência abdominal. Não se recomenda o oferecimento de altas quantidades de melão (75% da M.S.), porém a quantidade correspondente a 25% da M.S. é segura. Maiores concentrações dessa fruta na dieta podem ser utilizadas desde que se tomem cuidados para a adaptação gradual dos animais ao substrato.
