Uterine rupture after balloon inflation of the intrauterine Foley catheter during laparoscopic chromopertubation

Abstract: Laparoscopic chromopertubation is considered "gold standard" for checking the tubal patency. Foley catheter is frequently used for blue dye during chromopertubation. Complications associated with the intra-uterine use of Foley catheter are infrequent. The mean normal capacity of the uterine cavity is about 9 ml, and an inflation of up to 30 ml (e. g. during thermal balloon ablation procedures) is considered safe. We report a uterine rupture in a 36-year-old woman undergoing laparoscopic chromopertubation due t… Show more

“…The main clinical methods to determine tubal patency include laparoscopic uid staining, X-HSG and TVS 4D-HyCoSy, which have their own advantages and disadvantages. Laparoscopic uid staining, which is the "gold standard", is an invasive test [14] and has disadvantages such as high invasiveness, high cost and anesthesia risk, so it is usually used as a second-line veri cation or treatment after con rming obstruction by HSG. There may be a risk of iodine allergy.…”

“…The entire inspection process was conducted in a special examination room that was disinfected 30 min ahead with ultraviolet light. Foley's catheter (dimension 8–10) placement was performed according to standard procedures 29–31 . The HyCoSy procedure was started.…”

“…Currently, laparoscopy with chromopertubation is considered the gold standard test for tubal assessment, completed by hysteroscopic examination of the uterus. This approach, however, is not feasible as the first line evaluation due to high costs and potential surgical complications [2,3].…”
