Abstract. The ISO/IEC 29110 standard has at its core a Management and Engineering Guide [1] which are targeted at very small entities (enterprises, organizations, departments or projects) having up to 25 people [2], to assist them unlock the potential benefits of using standards which are specifically designed to address their needs. This paper is concerned with understanding the issues that affect the adoption of software process standards by Very Small Entities (VSEs), their needs from process standards and their willingness to engage with the new ISO/IEC 29110 standard in particular. This paper bring together two complimentary studies undertaken in Ireland and Ecuador which pose questions to VSE management regarding opinions, attitude and sentiment towards the adoption of the VSE designed standard ISO/IEC 29110. A series of interviews were untaken in both countries counties with qualitative data analysis utilizing the grounded theory coding mechanisms, to produce a picture of the current situation. This paper serves as a roadmap for both researchers wishing to understand the issues of process standards adoption by very small companies and also for the software process standards community.

Abstract. Variability management is critical for achieving the large scale reuse promised by the software product line paradigm. It has been studied for almost 20 years. We assert that it is important to explore how well the body of knowledge of variability management solves the challenges faced by industrial practitioners, and what are the remaining and (or) emerging challenges. To gain such understanding of the challenges of variability management faced by practitioners, we have conducted an empirical study using focus group as data collection method. The results of the study highlight several technical challenges that are often faced by practitioners in their daily practices. Different from previous studies, the results also reveal and shed light on several non-technical challenges that were almost neglected by existing research.

Abstract-This focus group study presents our first validation of practices for engineering the coordination requirements in cross organizational Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects.The study evaluates 13 practices addressing a variety of coordination aspects crucial to ERP projects. These practices are results in previously published research publications by the first author.The practices are formulated in response to practitioners' needs at ERP adopting organizations. The proposed practices have now reached the stage where we need some independent feedback as to the extent to which they fit the realities of practitioners. We perform this validation by means of a qualitative research approach, namely the focus group method.Current software engineering literature provides few examples of using focus groups in the evaluation of good software development practices. Because of this, providing reflections on our focus-group-based validation experiences will be of value to both the research community and practitioners.
