Using Pencil Drawing To Pattern Robust Superhydrophobic Surfaces To Control the Mobility of Water Droplets

Abstract: For centuries, pencils have been convenient implements for writing, drawing, and portraying. In this study, we found another use for the lowly pencil: to modulate the mobility of water droplets on a robust superhydrophobic surface. Here, we describe a simple method for fabricating durable superhydrophobic films from carbon nanotube (CNT)/polybenzoxazine coatings. These as-prepared coatings possessed robust superhydrophobicity with strong adhesion to glass and metal substrates. We achieved tunable water droplet… Show more

“…Generally, contact angle data are used to estimate the components of surface and interfacial tension . Hydrophobicity of some polybenzoxazine derivatives has been measured using this technique . In our case, we could foresee that the more the intramolecular bonding, the bigger the water contact angles.…”

“…3i would be attributed to the difference in the aggregation states of the islands of nano protrusion EPF/carbon soot particles in the surface. 48 Therefore, the superhydrophobicity of EPF/candle soot particles and EPF/camphor soot particle composites is mainly a consequence of the presence of the islands of branch like nano protrusions and low surface energy additives on the surface. A water droplet with required size does not penetrate into the protruded rough structures, but is rather suspended on the structures, ensuing in heterogeneous surfaces composed of air and solids.…”

“…Polybenzoxazines (PBZs) form a new class of thermosetting phenolic resins that can be prepared through thermal curing polymerization of various BZ monomers, without using a catalyst and without releasing byproducts ( Figure ) . PBZs can possess many attractive features including a high carbon residue, low surface energy, low moisture absorption, good thermal and mechanical properties, excellent dimensional stability, a stable dielectric constant, excellent flame retardancy, and good electrical properties that are not found for other traditional phenolic resins (e.g., phenolic bismaleimides, advanced epoxies) . Nevertheless, PBZs have limited applications at high temperature, because their C–N–C bonds break readily at temperatures above 260 °C .…”
