Background Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered method of behavior change counseling. It has shown promise in enabling patients to identify and improve problem health behaviors. Incorporating MI education into residency training may be beneficial. Objective To review the current evidence regarding the impact of MI education in graduate medical education. Results Of the 9 studies of MI education in graduate medical education training, most noted favorable outcomes after MI education. Outcomes included improvements in residents' view of MI, MI skill use and competency, and resident satisfaction with MI interventions. Of the 5 studies that looked at residents' views of MI, 3 found improvements in resident assessments of the importance of and confidence in using MI. Of the 4 studies of MI skills, 3 reported improvements in residents' use of and competency in the MI skill. The quality of MI education in the graduate medical education literature is limited by overreliance on preintervention and postintervention analysis as a study design, the variable intensity of educational interventions, and limited use of validated assessment tools and quantitative outcome measures. Conclusions Review of the literature shows that MI education can be successfully implemented within the residency education environment. The intensity of MI interventions, coupled with experiential learning and feedback, correlated with favorable outcomes in terms of resident use of MI skills and resident satisfaction. Further study is needed to determine which MI skills are most effectively taught to residents, the impact of MI training on resident behavior in clinical settings, and the impact on clinical outcomes.

Introduction : La formation spécialisée en psychiatrie vise l’acquisition de savoirs et de compétences. L’acquisition de capacités en liens avec les techniques d’entretien en constitue une composante importante. Parmi elles, l’entretien motivationnel est une technique d’entretien spécifique dont la maîtrise devrait être acquise durant l’internat. Objectif : Rapporter la planification et l’évaluation préliminaire des effets d’un dispositif d’enseignement de l’entretien motivationnel destiné à des internes en première année de diplôme d’études spécialisées (DES) en psychiatrie. Méthodes : Un séminaire de deux demi-journées, comportant une partie théorique et un enseignement pratique à base de jeux de rôle, a été élaboré et mis en œuvre pour les internes de première année du DES de psychiatrie de l’Université de Toulouse. Les apprentissages et la satisfaction des participants ont été évalués en recourant à des questionnaires administrés avant le séminaire, après le séminaire et trois mois après sa fin. Résultats : Dix-huit internes ont participé à au moins une des deux sessions. Les taux de réussite moyen au test d’évaluation des connaissances déclaratives étaient respectivement de 45,4 %, 94,5 % et 87,8 % avant le séminaire, à la fin du séminaire et trois mois après la fin du séminaire. Trois mois après le séminaire, 77,7 % des internes considéraient avoir utilisé souvent ou très souvent l’entretien motivationnel dans leur pratique courante et 66,6 % que l’amélioration de leur niveau de compétence en entretien avait été importante ou très importante. Conclusion : Un dispositif pédagogique de durée courte, spécifiquement dédié à l’enseignement et l’apprentissage de l’entretien motivationnel, a permis des apprentissages significatifs, en répondant aux attentes de formation des étudiants concernés et en améliorant leur sentiment de compétence en entretien motivationnel.

Motivational Interviewing and associated communication techniques and intervention methods have been widely applied in patients with substance use disorder and other psychiatric disorders in the last twenty years. Intensive research on effectiveness and underlying mechanisms as well as the increasing efforts to apply MI in other psychiatric disorders has lead to a large number of scientific publications in this field. MI has been shown to be effective in situations where the patient's ambivalence seems to impede the therapeutic process. Communication skills and the ability of the care taker to induce the so called "change talk" by the patient play a particularly important role and correlate with the positive effects of MI. Those groups of patients in which other factors than ambivalence affect the therapeutic process seem to benefit much less from this intervention method. MI hallmarks the substantial change that gradually took place during the last two decades in caretakers' attitude towards patients with dependence and other psychiatric patients: away from "prescriptive" towards "supportive" treatment and communication style. Therefore, it seems to be reasonable to implement the basics of MG in the training curricula for psychiatrists.
