Using modern plant breeding to improve the nutritional and technological qualities of oil crops

Abstract: -The last few decades have seen huge advances in our understanding of plant biology and in the development of new technologies for the manipulation of crop plants. The application of relatively straightforward breeding and selection methods made possible the "Green Revolution" of the 1960s and 1970s that effectively doubled or trebled cereal production in much of the world and averted mass famine in Asia. During the 2000s, much attention has been focused on genomic approaches to plant breeding with the deploym… Show more

“…The oil content of camelina in Western Canada was 38% to 43% (Gugel and Falk, 2006). However, further improvements in oil content are being investigated using advanced breeding, genomics techniques, and metabolic engineering, as demonstrated in some oil rapeseed varieties (Murphy, 2014;Vollmann et al, 2007). As shown in Fig.…”

“…Many strategies have been tested and carried out by the researchers to overcome the losses caused by BSR by improving the experimental researches from modern breeding strategies to more sophisticated production technologies [ 18 ]. The biological control strategies have been imposed, having some good impacts on disease suppression but generally not tested with in-field evaluation [ 11 ].…”

“…Основними методами отримання високоолеїнових мутацій в олійних культур є індукований мутагенез або трансгенез [4]. Поряд із цим, наявні відомості, що підвищення вмісту олеатів може здійснюватися і шляхом використання природного генетичного різноманіття олійних культур [5].…”
