Considering the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, the government and health sectors are incapable of making fast and reliable decisions, particularly given the various effects of decisions on different contexts or countries across multiple sectors. Therefore, leaders often seek decision support approaches to assist them in such scenarios. The most common decision support approach used in this regard is multiattribute decision‐making (MADM). MADM can assist in enforcing the most ideal decision in the best way possible when fed with the appropriate evaluation criteria and aspects. MADM also has been of great aid to practitioners during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Moreover, MADM shows resilience in mitigating consequences in health sectors and other fields. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the rise of MADM techniques in combating COVID‐19 by presenting a systematic literature review of the state‐of‐the‐art COVID‐19 applications. Articles on related topics were searched in four major databases, namely, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, from the beginning of the pandemic in 2019 to April 2021. Articles were selected on the basis of the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the identified systematic review protocol, and a total of 51 articles were obtained after screening and filtering. All these articles were formed into a coherent taxonomy to describe the corresponding current standpoints in the literature. This taxonomy was drawn on the basis of four major categories, namely, medical ( n = 30), social ( n = 4), economic ( n = 13) and technological ( n = 4). Deep analysis for each category was performed in terms of several aspects, including issues and challenges encountered, contributions, data set, evaluation criteria, MADM techniques, evaluation and validation and bibliography analysis. This study emphasised the current standpoint and opportunities for MADM in the midst of the COVID‐19 pandemic and promoted additional efforts towards understanding and providing new potential future directions to fulfil the needs of this study field.

The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic poses a major threat to the worldwide health care. In this context, epidemic modelling is an integral part of containment strategies. Compartmental models are typically used for this purpose. Analytical solutions of the two distinct but connected Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered-Deceased (SIRD) and Susceptible-Infectious-Quarantine-Recovered (SIQR) models are presented in this study. Furthermore, the behaviour at the start of a disease outbreak is derived. This analysis shows that a combination of transmission, recovery and isolation rates dominates the behaviour at the start of an epidemic. In addition, the loss occurring due to quarantine and lockdown measures is investigated, where it can be observed that quarantine procedures lead to a smaller loss in comparison with lockdown regulations. Within this framework, optimized strategies that lead to a constant epidemic peak or a minimized loss are presented.

Purpose Humanitarian organizations have faced the unprecedented consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this article, the authors therefore discuss how epidemics and pandemics, specifically Ebola and COVID-19, have affected humanitarian operations and supply chain management (HumOSCM), and how HumOSCM has contributed to preparedness for and response to epidemics and pandemics. The authors present lessons learned from responses to Ebola and COVID-19.Design/methodology/approach For this study, the authors review the scholarly HumOSCM literature, use documentary evidence from practitioner literature and apply a theory synthesis approach to derive recommendations on how HumOSCM could strengthen future responses to epidemics and pandemics.Findings The conceptualizations highlight the importance of strengthening collaboration, capability and capacity for the response to epidemics and pandemics. Furthermore, the components that can enhance the degree of collaboration, and hence, response formation, are discussed.Research limitations/implications As a non-empirical article, it suffers from the limitations of conceptual research. Hence, empirical testing of the proposed framework is recommended. The framework and propositions can serve as a basis for future studies.Practical implications The conceptual framework can help humanitarian organizations and other actors in the humanitarian sector to better understand how to prepare for future responses to epidemics and pandemics, in particular by considering the components that enhance the degree of collaboration, as well as through capability development and capacity building.Originality/value This article begins a discussion of how HumOSCM should evolve to better respond to future epidemics and pandemics.
