There is a general agreement that in pigs ileal rather than faecal digestibility measurements represent more accurate estimates of AA bioavailabilities since AA are only absorbed proximal to the distal ileum (Mosenthin et al., 2000). Ileal digestibilities are conventionally determined by collect- ABSTRACT: Three digestibility experiments were conducted to evaluate the potential of determination of apparent ileal digestibilities (AID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) by the mobile nylon bag technique (MNBT) using 21 feedstuffs and three mixed diets. In two conventional digestibility experiments (Exp. 1 and 2), AID were determined using in total 10 barrows (BW 35 kg) fitted with simple T-cannulas at the terminal ileum. For the MNBT studies, four pigs were fitted with a simple T-cannula at the proximal duodenum and a Post-Valve T-Caecum (PVTC) cannula at the terminal ileum. The MNBT studies included the feedstuffs (n = 10) from Exp. 1 and 2 as well as 14 further feedstuffs and mixed diets in which AID coefficients had been determined in previous trials. For each feedstuff 60 nylon bags were used. In vitro digestion of the bags was carried out in pepsin-HCl solution with 450 IU pepsin/l at pH 2.0 and 37°C for 4 h. In the 28-day in vivo experiment, 15 nylon bags per pig and day were inserted through the duodenal cannula and collected through the PVTC cannula after passage through the small intestine. Coefficients of AID were calculated based on the disappearance of CP and AA from the nylon bags during the in vitro and in vivo phase. In comparison with AID determined by the conventional method, AID of CP was on average 2.4% lower, whereas AID of lysine was on average 8.5% higher when determined by the MNBT. There was no significant (P > 0.05) correlation between AID coefficients of CP and AA determined by the conventional method and the MNBT, when all feedstuffs were taken into account. However, in cereals (n = 11), the correlation between AID coefficients determined by both methods was significant (P < 0.05) for CP (r = 0.61) and some AA (r ranging between 0.62 and 0.72). In conclusion, the potential of the MNBT to determine AID of CP and AA is rather limited. Differences in coefficients of AID of CP and AA were attributed to several factors such as diffusion of sample particles or endogenous protein through the nylon bags as well as to the presence of anti-nutritional factors (e.g. in legume seeds and oilseed meals).

Sci. 81: 371-378. Five feeds and five castrates were used to study the effects of washing rather than scrapping feces from bags on nutrient digestibility obtained with the mobile nylon bag technique (MNBT). Using unwashed bags, the MNBT and the conventional indicator method (CON) produced similar dry matter digestibility (DMD) with barley being the only ingredient where a difference (P < 0.05) was obtained between the two techniques. The linear regression equation was CON DMD = 5.39 + 0.92 MNBT DMD (r 2 = 0.95). The MNBT overestimated DMD with a bias of less than 0.1%. When washed bags were used, differences (P < 0.05) were obtained between the two techniques for barley, corn and oats and the MNBT overestimated DMD with a bias of 6.6%. There were no differences in gross energy digestibility (GED) when obtained with the indicator method or the MNBT using unwashed bags. The regression line equation was CON GED = 3.85 + 0.94 MNBT GED (r 2 = 0.95) and the MNBT overestimated GED with a bias of 1.4%. When washed bags were used, significant (P < 0.05) differences were obtained between techniques for GED with barley, corn, and oats. The MNBT overestimated GED with a bias of 7.3%. With unwashed bags, there were no differences in crude protein digestibility (CPD) obtained with the indicator method or the MNBT, with the exception of the mixed diet. The regression line equation was CON CPD = 28.16 + 0.60 MNBT CPD (r 2 = 0.53) and the MNBT overestimated CPD with a bias of 3%. When washed bags were used, significant (P < 0.05) differences were obtained between techniques for barley, corn, oats, wheat and the mixed diet, and the MNBT overestimated CPD with a bias of 12.8%. En E1 se determinó la EDA para GC con la técnica de la bolsa móvil de nailon (TBMN) utilizando ocho cerdos castrados con cánula duodenal. En E2 se determinaron la EDA y la energía metabolizable aparente (EMA) para GC, por el método convencional con indicador (MCI), con 10 cerdos castrados ubicados en jaulas metabólicas. En E1 y E2 se evaluaron, en un arreglo factorial 2 x 5, dos niveles de almidón de maíz (NA) en la dieta, 10% (NA10) y 12% (NA12), y cinco niveles de sustitución con GC (0%, 2,5%, 5,0%, 7,5% y 10%) en E1 en un diseño completo al azar y en E2 en un diseño de cuadrado latino. Para TBMN y MCI los datos se analizaron mediante regresión lineal múltiple y el metabolismo del nitrógeno en MCI como un diseño de cuadrado latino utilizando los módulos REG y GLM del paquete SAS. Por TBMN no hubo efectos (P > 0,05) del NA sobre la EDA de GC. La EDA de GC se calculó en 3.251 kcal/kg MS. La EDA de GC en MCI dependió de NA (P < 0,001) estimándose en 4.427,3 y 3.769,3 Kcal/kg MS para NA10 y NA12, respectivamente. Hubo interacción (P < 0,001) entre NA y GC para la cantidad de nitrógeno digestible, se redujo cuando GC aumentó en NA12 y aumentó en NA10. Otros parámetros del metabolismo nitrogenado no se vieron afectados (P > 0,05). Los resultados de EDA corregidos por NA con MCI mostraron correlación alta (R 2 = 0,82) con TBMN.
