“…In addition, before 1 month of age, the risk of aphakic glaucoma may be increased [6,7] . In cases of early diagnosis, expert consensus was reached for congenital cataract surgery before 8 weeks of age for bilateral cases and before 4-6 weeks of age for unilateral cases [8] . In a study conducted in the UK between 1995 and 1996, the median age at surgery was 4.57 months for bilateral cases and 2.99 months for unilateral cases, which is close to the present findings: 4.0 and 3.5 months, respectively.…”

“…Third, assigning a ‘score’ to the level of agreement facilitates a statistical approach to quantifying consensus 18. This method has been used in ophthalmology to develop competencies for UK optometrists involved in glaucoma shared care,17 to identify areas of consensus and disagreement in paediatric cataract management19 and to define the minimum set of outcome measures required following cataract surgery 20…”

“…IOL implantation in children <2 years of age remains controversial despite multiple studies on the subject, and there is still no consensus on the minimum age for IOL implantation in infants 10. In their study on cataract surgery in premature infants, Yu et al 8 performed primary IOL implantation in children >2 years; younger children were left aphakic and a secondary IOL implantation was preferred when the child was older.…”
