Use of Structural Equation Modeling to Predict the Intention to Purchase Green and Sustainable Homes in Malaysia

Abstract: This paper attempts to measure the intention of homebuyers to purchase green and sustainable homes using an extended theory of planned behavior model (TPB) in Malaysia. The results obtained indicate that attitude towards green housing, perceived behavior control, and perceived self-identity have positive causal effects on behavioral intentions to purchase such homes. However, social referents' opinion relating to sustainable homes is not significantly related to intent to purchase. The findings also indicate t… Show more

“…It is a social-cognitive model which postulates that performance of a particular behavior is determined by intention which is in turn, influenced by three constructs: attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control (PBC; Ajzen, 1991Ajzen, , 2012. Intentions are subjective judgments about how individuals will behave in future and has been used as a surrogate measure of future behavior in many studies (Giles et al, 2007;Tan, 2013;Wade et al, 2010). Attitude refers to an individual's positive or negative evaluation of performing a behavior.…”

“…Ten items were used to measure functional value is adapted from Hong et al (2012) and Lin and Huang (2012). Twelve items were used to measure symbolic value is adapted from Oliver and Lee (2010); Sinnappan and Rahman (2011);Tan (2013) and Lee (2009 (2011) and Lin and Huang (2012). Six items were adapted from Lin and Huang (2012) and Oliver and Lee (2010) to measure novelty values, whereas five items were adapted from Lin and Huang (2012) to measure conditional value.…”

“…Most of the authors used multi-item Likert-type scales to account for a trade-off between reaching a desired level of internal validity (which can be boosted with larger number of items in a scale) and fulfilling the request to produce simple measurement scales. In line with that, some authors opted for a three-item scale (Amran & Nee, 2012;Han, Hsu, & Sheu, 2010;Tan, 2013), five-item scale (Voon et al, 2011), or even 19-item scale (Tanner & Kast, 2003). Authors of this study used a five-item scale to evaluate the individual's intention to purchase green food products.…”
