The clean energy transition in islands is of paramount importance in the present era of climate change. The island of Crete, Greece has rich renewable energy resources which can be deployed for power generation. The clean energy transition of Crete, Greece, after the interconnection of its electric grid has been investigated. Solar and wind energy are already used with solar-PV systems and wind farms for electricity generation in Crete covering slightly more than 20% of its annual electricity demand. The elimination of fossil fuels’ use in the electricity sector in Crete deploying endogenous renewable energies is going to assist the achievement of the national and European goal for moving to net-zero carbon emissions societies. The maximum power that can be transferred through the two undersea electric cables interconnecting the grids of Crete and continental Greece is higher than the maximum power demand in Crete which currently does not exceed 700 MW. The size of the solar-PV systems generating the same amount of electricity which is currently produced with fossil fuels in Crete is at 1,698 MWp while their cost is around 2.04 bill. e. The corresponding size and cost of the wind farms are at 940.6 MW and 0.941 bill. e. Electricity storage in Crete either in PHES systems or in large-scale electric batteries will increase its energy security. The results, indicating that the de-carbonization of the electricity sector in Crete is technically and economically feasible, could be useful to policymakers, power companies, and local authorities on the island.

The aim of the current work is to investigate the possibility of developing energy tourism on the island of Crete, Greece. The concept of energy tourism is related to the interest of some visitors to explore various renewable energy installations during their vacations acquiring new knowledge, and experiences and probably having new perceptions about these benign energy technologies. The flourishing tourism industry and the existing renewable energy installations in Crete are mentioned. The preconditions of its development in Crete as well as the benefits of various stakeholders on the island are stated. Our results indicate that the required preconditions for the development of energy tourism in Crete are fulfilled offering new prospects for the promotion of thematic tourism on the island. Various daily guided tours to renewable energy installations could be organized and offered to visitors according to their interests and preferences. It can be said that Crete is a privileged island regarding the development of energy tourism having a flourishing tourism industry and abundant renewable energy resources currently used for heat and power generation. The findings of the current study are important for the future development of energy tourism in Crete which could create many benefits for all stakeholders on the island.

European islands are pioneers in the development of renewable energy technologies. Aim of the current research is to investigate the possibility of zeroing the net annual carbon emissions due to electricity generation in the island of Crete, Greece. Crete, with population 634,930 permanent residents, has abundant solar and wind energy resources while electricity generation from solar-PV systems and wind farms is highly profitable. The electric grid of Crete was autonomous so far but currently its interconnection with the grid of continental Greece is under construction. This will allow soon the transfer of large amounts of electricity between Crete and the mainland. When excess electricity will be generated by solar and wind energy systems in the island it could be transferred in mainland and vice-versa. Carbon neutrality due to electricity generation in Crete can be achieved with local generation of “green solar and wind electricity” combined with electricity transfer via two electric cables with the mainland. Annual electricity generation in Crete is currently at 3,043 GWh while 21.22% of it is generated by renewable energies. Carbon emissions due to electricity generation are calculated at 3.22 tnCO2/capita. It has been estimated that the required size of solar-PV systems generating annually the electricity currently produced by fossil fuels in Crete is at 1,698 MWp while their cost is at 2.04 bil. €. The required size of wind farms generating annually the electricity currently produced by fossil fuels is at 950.6 MWel while their cost is at 0.914 bil. €. It is concluded that carbon neutrality due to electricity generation in Crete is technically and economically feasible.
