Insoluble contaminants and varnish, resulting from oil degradation byproducts and sometimes depleted additive molecules, are initiated primarily due to thermal stress on the oil. This poses significant challenges in tribology, particularly for the lubrication systems of modern complex machinery, leading to severe debilitating effects such as loss of operating clearances and impaired heat transfer. Addressing varnish buildup is crucial, and timely oil analysis emerges as a valuable tool, offering essential insights into the oil degradation level and the potential presence of insoluble contaminants. Among the various laboratory testing methods available to assess varnish potential, colorimetric analysis, specifically Membrane Patch Colorimetry (MPC), is widely applied owing to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This study extends the application of MPC test principles, commonly utilized for turbine oils, to measure insoluble contaminants generated by degraded hydraulic fluids. Adhering to the ASTM D7843-21 standard, which stipulates the precision of this testing method for turbine oils is contingent upon the sample’s incubation period, our investigation focuses on exploring modifications to the standard 72-hour incubation period. We aim to assess the viability of shortening or extending this duration for conducting MPC tests on used hydraulic fluids, thereby potentially enhancing the precision and relevance of MPC tests in hydraulic fluid analysis.

In a near future when Industry 4.0 is implanted, predictive maintenance will have a much more prominent role than that currently plays in traditional industry. Predictive maintenance is the organized monitoring with periodic or continuous measurement of variables of the state of the equipment to be maintained and its comparison with preestablished patterns for the determination of the instant in which the maintenance intervention should take place. Three-phase induction motor drives are one of the industrial equipment that has been given greater attention regarding predictive maintenance plans. In recent years, switched reluctance motor drives have begun to have some relevance in the industry. In this paper, after a brief review of the switched reluctance motors and their control, an analysis of the different types of faults and a description of the most usual diagnostic techniques in electric drives, a predictive maintenance plan for switched reluctance motor drives is proposed. This predictive maintenance plan considers different control strategies (hysteresis and single pulse), and is based on diagnostic techniques such as analysis of currents and spectral analysis of vibrations. Exhaustive experimental tests have been carried out in order to validate the proposed plan.

In today’s engineering industry, technical diagnostics presents many advantages for improving the management of machining centers and automated production lines. As the fourth industrial revolution is currently being implemented, which includes machine diagnostics, the idea of adding information from the field of vibrodiagnostics was born. The vibration of the workpiece or machine tool negatively affects the geometric parameters of the machined surfaces of the workpiece. Through vibrodiagnostics, the influence of cutting parameters on the oscillation of a bearing steel workpiece during centerless grinding is investigated. The presented publication deals with the vibration of the mechanical parts of a centerless grinding machine. The oscillations are recorded by acceleration sensors, which are also placed on the support ruler in which the workpieces are guided, and the recorded data are input parameters for statistical processing of acceleration values in the form of statistical characteristics (minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, maximum). In this paper, this procedure was applied for the selection of the optimum cutting parameters (for the speed of the support wheel), where the machining parameters at which the minimum oscillation values occur were selected based on the above-mentioned statistical characteristics. This optimization procedure revealed increased vibration values which reached the highest amplitude on the ruler, namely accelerations of 11 m/s2, the origin of which was subsequently detected by STFT because the occurrence of resonance events or the excitation of natural frequencies of the machine were suspected. The STFT analysis identified a resonant region at machine start-up determined by the spindle speed which excites the resonance on the machine. The speed range between 1950 and 2150 rpm, which corresponds to the built-up resonance, was provided to the technologists to ensure that the machine was not operated around this resonance region at 400 and 760 Hz until the undesired phenomenon was eliminated. The results of the individual measurements provided information on the ideal setting of the cutting parameters and the current state of the machine.
