Use of Dramatization to Teach Cardiac Cycle Physiology to Medical Students

Abstract: Part of the educator"s mission is to develop new methodologies that promote active learning. This study examines the use of dramatization of the cardiac cycle in medical school. Two groups (n=42, 21 each) of first-year medical students participated. Group A was initially taught through dramatization alone, while Group B was taught through lecture followed by dramatization. Students completed a 13-item assessment (pretest and posttest) designed to measure knowledge of the cardiac system immediately before and a… Show more

“…This activity was originally developed by an M1 student at the time (Brian William Connor) for his small group in PBL, inspired by another dramatization 2,3 offered by a faculty member in the classroom (Helena Carvalho; cardiac cycle dramatization). The excitement and engagement observed in the PBL group prompted further development to be offered to all students.…”

“…In an attempt to promote long-term learning, we describe an active classroom exercise that can be used to complement or replace a traditional lecture. After seeing the positive impact of using dramatization to teach other cardiovascular concepts, 2,3 we developed and implemented a dramatization to teach Starling forces and their application to clinical scenarios.…”

“…Active learning through dramatization could be a technique that will cause higher learning. As a result, it pushes students to grasp and retain content instead of merely memorizing it (Dowlati, 2016). Howard Gardner's theory on multiple intelligences (1987) proposed that there are eight intelligences and suggested the possible addition of a ninth called "existentialist intelligence" so as to capture the total range of abilities and skills that the individual possesses, Gardner (1987) theorizes that individuals don't have just an intellectual capacity, but have many kinds of intelligence, including musical, interpersonal, spatial-visual, and linguistic intelligences.…”
