Use of blocking reagent to confirm enzyme immunoassay results in Chlamydial conjunctivitis

Abstract: A blocking reagent (Abbott) was used to test 153 conjunctival and nasopharyngeal samples from children with signs of early trachoma and from neonates and adults with conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis in whom positive results had been obtained on at least one occasion in an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) (Abbott). EIA and cycloheximide-treated McCoy cell cultures of the eye sample were equally often positive in the non-trachoma cases (70 versus 71), the EIA results being confirmed by the blocking reagent… Show more

“…Cervical samples were also tested for C. trachomatis by an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Assumed positive ELISA results were also tested by a confirmatory test [13]. The methods used for detection and typing of human papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical cell samples has been described in detail elsewhere [12].…”

“…Cervical samples were collected by swabs provided by the kit producer, (Chlamydiazyme TM , Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, Illinois, or MicroTrak I1 chlamydial EIA (Syva, Palo Alto, California) for enzyme immunoassays (EIA). Positive Chlamydiazyme tests were confirmed by Abbott's Chlamydia confirmatory test 16 .…”
