Use in vitro of Gold Nanoparticles Functionalized with Folic Acid as a Photothermal Agent on Treatment of HeLa Cells

Abstract: <p>Folic acid (FA) is used as a recognition molecule to achieve selective internalization in cancer cells. Here functionalized gold nanoparticles with folic acid (AuNP-FA) are proposed as suitable therapeutic agents for cervix cancer cells by photothermal damage. The functionalized gold nanoparticles with folic acid were synthesized by mixing hydrogen tetrachloroaurate with folic acid in a molar ratio of 0.56/1 under radiation of mercury lamp (λmax=254 nm). HeLa cells were incubate… Show more

“…In this study, the combinatory extract type effects on the Au nanoparticles were investigated. For the functionalization, a common practice for previous studies is to use specific compounds; 3–5 meanwhile, this study utilized Allium sativum (AS) extract with various sulfur (S) containing compounds to highlight the strong Au–S bond. The target application for the synthesis is making the spectroscopically silent lead( ii ) ion (Pb 2+ ) be detectable in the visible light region for monitoring purposes in aqueous systems.…”

“…FA functionalized nanomaterials and nanocarriers have been reported in diagnostic [6,8,[10][11][12] and treatment [13][14][15] applications. Bellotti et al developed terpolymerbased nanocapsules loaded with DNA functionalized with FA for the targeted delivery of nucleic acids to cancer cells.…”

“…Here, a simple one-step photochemical synthesis of P6CA-AuNPs was developed, without surfactants and long reaction times, for photothermal therapy of HeLa cells using 808 nm NIR laser for irradiation during 5 min at 800mW. The results show that AuNPs functionalized with a molecule with a pterin group can internalize and cause cell damage to cancer cells like their correspondent FA-AuNPs in the presence of near-infrared (NIR) radiation [15].…”
