Urolithiasis in pregnancy

Abstract: Urolithiasis is the most common cause of urological-related abdominal pain in pregnant women after urinary tract infection. The disease is not uncommon during pregnancy occurring in 1/200 to 1/2,000 women, which is not different from the incidence reported in the nonpregnant female population of reproductive age. During pregnancy, the frequency of stone localization is twice as higher in the ureter than in the renal pelvis or calyx, but there is no difference between the left and right kidney or ureter. “…The first step in the management of urinary lithiasis or renal colic during pregnancy should be a conservative treatment. Conservative treatment modalities (intravenous hydratation and analgesia) favor a spontaneous stone passage in 4-84 % of pregnant patients [12][13][14]. At present, US is preferred as first-line imaging modality in pregnancy, because it is non-invasive and free from ionizing radiation.…”

“…Numerous studies on URS in pregnancy prove that it is a safe and effective method of treating urolithiasis in pregnant women in every trimester of pregnancy and the complications incidence is largely dependent on the operator's experience The incidence of complications from URS carried out during pregnancy is similar to that in non-pregnant patients [9] [17] [20]. ESWL and PNL are contraindicated during pregnancy [16]- [18] [20].…”

“…No signs of azotemia were detected. From the literature, 50-80% of stones during the pregnancy period would respond to conservative treatment and about 1/3 of them required surgical intervention (1, 3, 18, 22). …”

“…Urinary stone incidence during pregnancy has been reported in a wide range, from 1 in 200 to 1 in 2000 pregnancies, which is not different from non-pregnant patients (1) and the treatment of symptomatic urolithiasis during the pregnancy period is a challenging issue (1, 2). …”
