It is generally believed that land-use changes can affect a variety of ecosystem services (ES), but the relationships involved remain unclear due to a lack of systematic knowledge and gaps in data. In order to make rational decisions for land-use planning that is grounded in a systematic understanding of trade-offs between different land-use strategies, it is very important to understand the response mechanisms of various ecosystem services to changes in land-use. Therefore, the objective of our study is to assess the effects of land-use change on six ecosystem services and their trade-offs among the ecosystem services in the ecological conservation area (ECA) in Beijing, China. To do this, we projected future land-use in 2030 under three different scenarios: Business as Usual (BAU), Ecological Protection (ELP), and Rapid Urban Development (RUD), using GeoSOS-FLUS model. Then, we quantified six ecosystem services (carbon storage, soil conservation, water purification, habitat quality, flood regulation, and food production) in response to land-use changes from 2015 to 2030, using a spatially explicit InVEST model. Finally, we illustrated the trade-offs and/or synergistic relationships between each ecosystem service quantified under each of the different scenarios in 2030. Results showed that built-up land is projected to increase by 281.18 km2 at the cost of water bodies and cultivated land from 2015 to 2030 under the RUD scenario, while forest land is projected to increase by 152.38 km2 under the ELP scenario. The carbon storage, soil conservation, habitat quality, and the sum of ecosystem services (SES) would enrich the highest level under the ELP scenario. Land-use strategies that follow the ELP scenario can better maintain the ecosystem services and sustainable development of natural and social economic systems.

Since the implementation of the Chinese economic reforms, economic development in the coastal cities has resulted in serious degradation of habitat quality; however, the concept of "ecological civilization" has improved this situation. For quantitative analysis of the correlation between the Pearl River Delta urban expansion and changes in habitat quality under the influence of the policy, we first analyzed the habitat quality change based on the InVEST model and then measured the impact of construction land expansion on the habitat quality through habitat quality change index (HQCI) and contribution index (CI) indicators. Finally, the correlation between urbanization level and habitat quality was evaluated using geographically weighted regression (GWR) and the Self-organizing feature mapping neural network (SOFM). The results indicated that: (1) during the study period, the habitat quality index decreased from 0.7181 to 0.6672 owing to urban expansion, and the decrease was most significant from 2000 to 2010. (2) The urbanization index had a negative effect on the habitat quality, but this improved after 2000, reflecting the positive effect of policies such as "ecological civilization construction" (3) The importance of ecological civilization varies greatly among cities in the study area: Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, and Zhongshan have the best level of green development. These results reflect the positive role of policies in the prevention of damage to habitat quality caused by economic development and provide a reference for the formulation of sustainable urban development policies with spatial differences.

Ecosystem services (ESs) are closely bound up with human welfare. To propose regional exploitive tactics for the harmonious relationship between urbanization and ecological environment, it is essential to sort out the relationship between urbanization and ESs, and to untangle the urban-rural differences of the ecological environment effects. Regarding Beijing as an example, this study firstly explored the spatiotemporal characteristics of the ESs and the urbanization. Secondly, this study applied the latest methods based on nighttime light and K-means algorithm to identify the urban area, urban-rural fringe and rural area in Beijing. Then we explored the spatiotemporal interaction characteristics of urbanization on ESs through decoupling analysis. Finally, the correlation analysis and curve fitting were used to quantify the correlation between urbanization and ESs in urban scale and regional scale. The main conclusions included: (1) ESs declined with the increase of urbanization; (2) In cities or regions, coordinated development was the main trend of ESs and urbanization; (3) The relationship between changes in ESs and changes in urbanization has regional differences.
