This paper analyzes the role of natural geography for explaining local population change patterns. Using spatially detailed data for Spain from 1960 to 2011, the estimation results indicated that natural geography variables relate to about half of the population growth variation of rural areas and more than a third of the population growth variation of urban areas during this period. Local differences in climate, topography, and soil and rock formation as well as distance to aquifers and the coast contribute to variations in local population growth patterns. Although, over time, local population change became less related to differences in natural geography, natural geography is still significantly related to nearly a third of the variation in local population change in rural areas and the contribution of temperature range and precipitation seasonality has even increased. For urban areas, weather continues to matter too, with growth being higher in warmer places.

Previous studies have found that trust has a positive effect on subjective wellbeing. However, when trust is accumulated within a community, it can create expectations of trustworthiness and consequently be transformed into shared social norms. We hypothesized that trust toward community members (i.e., community trust) would have a positive effect on well-being at the individual level. Further, we anticipated that it would have a negative contextual effect on subjective well-being at the community level, because it constrains individual freedom by constructing shared norms within a community. We mailed our survey to each household across 105 randomly-sampled communities in the Yasu River watershed in Shiga prefecture, Japan. We conducted multilevel analyses using the survey data (Nindivdual = 3,116, Ncommunity = 99). As predicted, the results showed that community trust had a positive effect on subjective well-being at the individual level and a negative contextual effect at the community level. This suggests that living in a community where residents trust each other may dampen one's subjective well-being. Implications for studies on happiness and social dynamics are discussed.

This research focuses on people’s perceptions and expectations from nature and nature experience and their preferences of nature types. One-on-one face-to-face interviews were conducted with 500 respondents using a paper-pencil survey questionnaire. Our results show that the most frequently cited meaning of nature was fresh air and green space. Overall, the majority of the respondents associated the concept of nature with green areas, coasts, and panoramas. The psychological dimension of nature was also mentioned by about one-third of the respondents. The most beloved part of being in nature reported by the respondents was being away from city life and work. The respondents had strong preferences for being near water, primarily by the seaside. It is concluded that, for many people, nature and biological components of nature help with the recovery from work stress and city hassle.
