As the largest Chinese city by population and the largest city proper by population in the world, Shanghai has frequently suffered the heavy haze in recent years. In this study, the observational data (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , O 3 , NO 2 , CO and SO 2 ) at the ten urban monitoring stations in Shanghai from November 25 to December 9, 2013, were used to analyze the haze pollution. The source contributions of PM 2.5 in Shanghai were identified by trajectory clustering and hybrid receptor models (potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration weighted trajectory (CWT)). The results showed that for the whole study period, the ranges of pollutant concentrations are 2. . It was found that PM 2.5 contributed more than 80% of PM 10 for the whole period except the relatively clean period in which only 45% of PM 10 is PM 2.5 . The model analyses show that clean air masses reaching at Shanghai were from the far away regions like Mongolia and Inner Mongolia with the high mean wind speed (fast air masses). On the other hand, the heavy haze air masses were mainly from the nearby industrialized and urbanized provinces with industrial cities. It was found that the formation of the extremely heavy haze from December 5 to 7 in Shanghai was mainly because of the air pollution transported from the nearby provinces (i.e., Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang) and central part provinces (such as Shandong, Hebei) of eastern China. The correlation analyses among PM 2.5 and other pollutants show that the PM 2.5 formation in Shanghai is affected by the sources similar to those of CO such as combustion, industry, mobile and oxidation of hydrocarbons. Finally, the controlling strategies are discussed on the basis of this result.

The festival of Diwali and it associated fireworks, which were not so common in the past, are slowly penetrating into rural Brahmaputra Valley. PM 10 monitoring was done during the 2009 Diwali festivities at a rural site in the Brahamputra Valley of Northeast India. Sampling of PM 10 was done on a 12 hourly basis for an extended period of 13 consecutive days. The mean PM 10 concentration during the monitoring campaign was found to be 40.88 ± 19 µg/m 3 and the maximum concentration of PM 10 was recorded on the Pre-Diwali night. Elemental and ionic constituents of PM 10 were analyzed by ICP-OES and Ion Chromatograph (IC), respectively. The ratio of ∑anions to ∑cations was found to be 1.26 for the study period, which is indicative of a cation deficient condition. Pearson's correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were carried out to trace the impact of Diwali celebrations. In addition, the elemental enrichments due to Diwali fireworks, which we term Diwali Induced Enrichments (DIE) were calculated for the festival day samples. DIE showed marginal enrichment of elements and ions, indicating the beginning of the impact of Diwali in the rural areas of the region.

Ozone and fine particle in the western Yangtze River Delta: an overview of 1 yr data at the SORPES station

This work presents an overview of 1 yr measurements of ozone (O₃) and fine particular matter (PM_2.5) and related trace gases at a recently developed regional background site, the Station for Observing Regional Processes of the Earth System (SORPES), in the western part of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in eastern China. Ozone and PM_2.5 showed strong seasonal cycles but with contrast patterns: O₃ reached a maximum in warm seasons but PM_2.5 in cold seasons. Correlation analysis suggests a VOC-sensitive regime for O₃ chemistry and a formation of secondary aerosols under conditions of high O₃ in summer. Compared with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards in China, our measurements report 15 days of O₃ exceedance and 148 days of PM_2.5 exceedance during the 1 yr period, suggesting a severe air pollution situation in this region. Case studies for typical O₃ and PM_2.5 episodes demonstrated that these episodes were generally associated with an air mass transport pathway over the mid-YRD, i.e., along the Nanjing–Shanghai axis with its city clusters, and showed that synoptic weather played an important role in air pollution, especially for O₃. Agricultural burning activities caused high PM_2.5 and O₃ pollution during harvest seasons, especially in June. A calculation of potential source contributions based on Lagrangian dispersion simulations suggests that emissions from the YRD contributed to over 70% of the O₃ precursor CO, with a majority from the mid-YRD. North-YRD and the North China Plain are the main contributors to PM_2.5 pollution in this region. This work shows an important environmental impact from industrialization and urbanization in the YRD region, and suggests an urgent need for improving air quality in these areas through collaborative control measures among different administrative regions
