Updated terminology of chronic venous disorders: The VEIN-TERM transatlantic interdisciplinary consensus document

Abstract: Non-uniform terminology in the world's venous literature has continued to pose a significant hindrance to the dissemination of knowledge regarding the management of chronic venous disorders. This VEIN-TERM consensus document was developed by a transatlantic interdisciplinary faculty of experts under the auspices of the American Venous Forum (AVF), the European Venous Forum (EVF), the International Union of Phlebology (IUP), the American College of Phlebology (ACP), and the International Union of Angiology (IUA… Show more

“…10,11 The scores were calculated and registered at the time of presentation and not calculated retrospectively. Disease duration and severity were obtained from patient history and, from those data, it appeared that elevated BMIs preceded the patients' chronic venous insufficiency, particularly the more severe clinical characteristics such as higher C in the CEAP classification.…”

“…Underlying theory: The construct PTS was defined according to the literature as "chronic venous symptoms and/or signs secondary to DVT and its sequelae" (23,24). Therefore, PTS was considered to be defined precisely by the items (signs and symptoms) that are chosen to measure 25).…”

“…Importantly, physicians caring for adult patients with chronic venous disorders, including PTS, have already recognized that the lack of consistent definitions of the terms used in venous diseases negatively impacts the comparison of clinical outcomes across studies and the exchange of medical information (23), and can affect the reliability of the tools. To address this issue, an international and interdisciplinary group of experts in venous disorders developed several consensus documents, including the CEAP, revised CEAP, and VEIN-TERM consensus, which provided a common language for the reporting of chronic venous diseases (21,23).…”
