Update on hepatitis B and C virus diagnosis

Abstract: Viral hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV) are responsible for the most of chronic liver disease worldwide and are transmitted by parenteral route, sexual and vertical transmission. One important measure to reduce the burden of these infections is the diagnosis of acute and chronic cases of HBV and HCV. In order to provide an effective diagnosis and monitoring of antiviral treatment, it is important to choose sensitive, rapid, inexpensive, and robust analytical methods. Primary diagnosis of HBV and HCV infect… Show more

“…The quality of all these assays is described in detail elsewhere . All PCR positive results were tested for HCV genotype by TRUGENE HCV 5′NC Genotyping kit (SIEMENS) that had a lower limit of detection of 5000 IU/mL of HCV‐RNA . All PCR confirmed HCV‐infected patients were excluded from subsequent two‐monthly screenings.…”

“…Appropriate indications for HCV VL and genotype were determined after consultation with infectious disease experts at our institution as well as a literature review. Testing indications for HCV VL included either suspicion of acute HCV or the need to distinguish between chronic and cleared HCV in patients with positive antibodies but no prior VL . We advised that HCV genotype be reserved for patients imminently starting HCV therapy to guide the treatment regimen .…”
