Unquenched flavors in the Klebanov-Witten model

Abstract: Using AdS/CFT, we study the addition of an arbitrary number of backreacting flavors to the Klebanov-Witten theory, making many checks of consistency between our new Type IIB plus branes solution and expectations from field theory. We study generalizations of our method for adding flavors to all N = 1 SCFTs that can be realized on D3-branes at the tip of a Calabi-Yau cone. Also, general guidelines suitable for the addition of massive flavor branes are developed.

“…As pointed out earlier, this global symmetry and its associated gauge field in the gravity dual will make an appearance once the system is embedded within the framework of N = 4 SYM coupled to a large number of smeared flavour D7-branes giving rise to massive multiplets. For massive flavours, the backreacted geometry in the smeared D7-brane setup of [49] (see also [50,19]) has an IR geometry (below the quark mass scale) which is simply AdS 5 × S 5 . Switching on an electric field on the D7-branes (corresponding to a chemical potential/quark density) will result in a spike on the D7-branes behaving precisely like a bundle of smeared strings in AdS 5 × S 5 .…”

“…Furthermore, one can show [13] that the embedding is kappa symmetric, which implies that the configuration we would like to smear is not only stable but also supersymmetric [30]. 11 For the interested reader, the stability analysis is carried out in appendix A.…”

“…The background we have found has two curvature singularities: a UV singularity and an IR one. The first one is found when τ approaches its maximal value τ 0 and is the usual singularity that occurs in systems with backreacting 7-branes, found also in [12]. The physical interpretation of this singularity in our solution is the appearance of a Landau pole for the 'diagonal' gauge coupling (g −2…”

“…On the field theory side, the effect is that of 'smearing' over the flavor-bifundamental quartic superpotential (2). A thorough analysis of the effects of the smearing, on both sides of these dualities, can be found in [12]. For the time being, it suffices to say that these effects do not enter in the most important physical phenomena exhibited by our solution, such as the duality cascade and the IR dynamics, where supposedly the bifundamental fields disappear, as in the unflavored solution.…”
