Unidentate versus symmetrically and unsymmetrically bidentate nitrate co-ordination in pyrazole-containing chelates. The crystal and molecular structures of (nitrato-O)[tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)amine]copper(II) nitrate, (nitrato-O,O′)[tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)amine]nickel(II) nitrate, and (nitrato-O)(nitrato-O,O′)[tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)amine]cadmium(II)

“…The Ni II ion is in a distorted octahedral environment formed by two pyrazole N atoms and the amine N atom of tped, an O atom of a water molecule and two O atoms of one of the nitrate anions. The Ni--N and Ni--O bond lengths are comparable to values found in related compounds (Driessen, Haanstra & Reedijk, 1992;Claramunt, Domiano, Elguero, & Lavandera, 1989;Kleywegt, Wiesmeijer, van Driel, Driessen, Reedijk & Noordik, 1985).…”

“…Using a KBr matrix, the IR spectrum showed a very strong band at approximately 1381 cm -1 which is indicative of the simultaneous presence of ionic and coordinated nitrates; 67 it is noted that pressing a KBr pellet can also influence the nitrate coordination which has been fully discussed in the literature. 69 In addition, the solid-state spectrum of 9 displayed bands at 1527 and 1321 cm -1 , which are indicative of bidentate chelating nitrate groups. The assumption of bidentate chelating nitrate groups 67 was further established from the nitrate vibrations observed in the Nujol mull spectrum of 9, since the separation of the two bands ν 1 and ν 5 is approximately 200 cm -1 (ν 1 (NO 3 ) 1527 cm -1 , ν 5 (NO 3 ) 1334 cm -1 ).…”

“…The patterns of the stretching and bending vibration bands of nitrate ions are somewhat different for compounds 1 and 2, indicative of a slightly different nitrate coordination mode. Bands of indicative vibrations and geometric criteria for the nitrate ion coordination mode [28] are given in Table 1. Geometric criteria obtained from single-crystal diffraction data (see Section 2.2) indicate a unidentate coordination mode for both of the compounds, although for compound 1 the criteria (l 2 -l 1 ) and (A 1 -A 2 ) are close to boundary values of 0.6 Å and 28 • [28].…”

Separation between the asymmetric stretching bands (∆ν 3 ) is also greater for this compound, suggesting a nitrate coordination mode intermediate between unidentate and anisobidentate.…”
