Unexpectedly strong effect of caffeine on the vitality of western honeybees (Apis mellifera)

Abstract: We examined the influence of caffeine on honeybee lifespan, Nosema resistance, key enzyme activities, metabolic compound concentrations, and total DNA methylation levels. Caffeine slowed age-related metabolic tendencies. Bees that consumed caffeine lived longer and were not infested with Nosema spp. Caffeine-treated workers had higher protein concentrations. The levels increased with aging but they then decreased in older bees. Caffeine increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx, CAT, GST), AST,… Show more

“…They decrease, in turn, after supplementation (e.g. caffeine; Strachecka et al, 2014a). Therefore, we suppose that curcumin may influence not only biochemical but also epigenetic characteristics in honeybees, particularly global DNA methylation changes related with ageing (hypothesis 3).…”

“…Although various studies have been carried out on honeybees and other insects, there are only a limited number of studies on the catalase (CAT) activities of worker bees at different ages (Weirich et al, 2002;Strachecka et al, 2014aStrachecka et al, , 2014b. The aims of this study were to determine CAT activity, total RNA level, and total protein, which play a significant role in the honeybee life cycle in different age groups of worker honeybees.…”
