Unemployment

Tom Boland,
Ray Griffin

Abstract: Initially, “unemployment” described the situation of workers who could not find a job because of economic dislocations or redundancy. The phrase was quickly taken up in social policy as a key focus of the welfare state. As unemployment has become the focus of sociological investigation, it has incrementally come to be understood as a social situation – structured by the institution of work, shaped by governmental policies, and interpreted culturally.
