-Although vertical (mother-to-offspring) information transfer has been reported in dolphins, it is unclear whether horizontal information transfer takes place between peers of non-parental individuals. We hypothesized that horizontal information transmission takes place within juvenile social play-forage subgroups and within pairs of juveniles in the form of social learning, as a way for older juveniles to contribute to the further development of younger juveniles' foraging skills. Since 1985, a long-term study in the Bahamas has involved the collection of underwater videos and sound recordings on the social structure of a resident community of free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphins Stenella frontalis. Foraging behaviors of juvenile dolphins were analyzed in 24 independent foraging events recorded on video from 1994 to 2013. Forty-nine juveniles in total were observed, including eight individually identified juveniles foraging alone, eight individually identified juveniles foraging in pairs, and 33 juveniles foraging in eight subgroups of three or more dolphins. The comparison of older juveniles' behavior against younger juveniles' behavior in juvenile play-forage subgroups suggested the potential for horizontal transmission of information about prey location. However, we found no direct evidence for social learning or of teaching in pairs. This new information about wild Atlantic spotted dolphin social structure is a starting point in horizontal information transmission research and is important in terms of cognitive processes and welfare implications.

Many dolphin studies, including those on this spotted dolphin community, have indicated that mother/calf interaction and maternal care are highest in the first few months to year of an offspring's life (Hill et al, 2007;Mann & Smuts, 1998, 1999Miles & Herzing, 2003). Thus parental care behaviors, including discipline, may be performed with higher frequency in the early years of a spotted dolphin calf's life, as opposed to their juvenile years.…”

-Maternal and alloparental disciplinary behavior were examined in a community of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) on Little Bahama Bank, Bahamas. An operational definition of discipline was created and analyses were performed of underwater behavior by spotted dolphins. Results indicated that both mothers and alloparents performed discipline towards juveniles and calves in their community. Both males and females were observed performing and receiving discipline. Disciplinarians were significantly more likely to be adults than juveniles, and receivers of discipline were significantly more likely to be calves than juveniles. Pursuit, contact, and display behaviors were used in discipline, however pursuit behaviors were most often observed. Variables such as age class, sex, and parity were not found to influence how discipline was implemented, nor outcome. The durations of all disciplinary pursuits analyzed were under thirty seconds.

ResumoO estudo do comportamento animal é uma área de pesquisa consolidada, que cresceu e se diversificou em vários países e que deu origem a disciplinas e abordagens de investigação, como a Etologia, a Ecologia Comportamental, a Neuroecologia, a Psicologia e a Psicologia evolucionista. No estudo do comportamento animal, o etograma é a base para estudos comportamentais de espécies pouco conhecidas, como também para comparar comportamentos de populações distintas de uma mesma espécie. Tradicionalmente, um etograma descreve de forma detalhada eventos comportamentais realizados por indivíduos de uma espécie. O presente estudo apresenta um etograma dos eventos comportamentais realizados na superfície por uma espécie de golfinho costeiro, boto cinza, na praia de Pipa -RN. An ethogram traditionally describes behavioral events performed by individuals of the same species in detail. This study presents an ethogram of behavioral events performed on surface by a costal dolphin known as the gray dolphin (Marine Tucuxi Dolphin), at Pipa Beach, RN.
