-The surface of nanosilica and microsilica was modified in order to develop a high voltage insulation material for outdoor application. The modified silicas were well dispersed in an aliphatic cyclic epoxy resin. Dielectric properties were studied for 8 kinds of specimens: 1 kind of neat epoxy, 3 kinds of epoxy/microsilica composites, and 4 kinds of epoxy/ microsilica/nanosilica composites. Complex dielectric constants were measured in the range of 10-2 1.2 Hz at room temperature.Key Words : Nano silica surface modification, Epoxy/Micro silica composites, Epoxy/Nano-micro silica composites, Dielectric permittivity, Outdoor cycloaliphatic epoxy

In this study, epoxy-cubic boron nitride composites are fabricated, and their dielectric response is investigated. They exhibit the same trend as epoxy composites reinforced with other filler types. Thus, at low filler concentrations, they exhibit a lower relative permittivity than neat epoxy. As the fill grade further increases, the relative permittivity of the composites increases as well. It is suggested that two competing mechanisms, namely polymer re-organization and water uptake, mainly determine the dielectric response of epoxy composites. The former is related to the decrease while the latter to the increase of the relative permittivity. The experimental results clearly verify that water uptake strongly depends on the filler concentration and not only affects the dielectric response of epoxy composites but also it is one of the main mechanisms which dictate their dielectric behavior.

Epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite was prepared, and the effects of alumina content on the dielectric properties were investigated in order to develop an insulation material for gas-insulated switchgears (GIS). Nano-sized alumina (average particle size: 30 nm) was also incorporated into the epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite. Dielectric tests were carried out in ASTM D 150, and capacitance (Cp) and dielectric loss (tanδ) were measured. The dielectric constant increased with increasing alumina content in the epoxy/micro-alumina system and the epoxy/microalumina/nano-alumina system. As 1,3-diglycidyl glyceryl ether (DGE) content increased, the dielectric constant decreased and dielectric loss increased. This ocurred as a result of the weak electric field enhancement due to homogeneous dispersion of micro-and nano-sized alumina particles in an epoxy composite.
