Understanding Breastfeeding Behavior: Rates and Shifts in Patterns in Québec

Abstract: The study objective was to measure breastfeeding rates and patterns in the Montérégie region of Québec. A survey of 632 mothers of 6-month-old infants was performed, of which 80% initiated breastfeeding, and 68% exclusively breastfed at birth. Breastfeeding rates progressively decreased with time: 63%, 56%, 51%, 44%, 39%, and 32% of mothers breastfed at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 months, respectively. Among mothers breastfeeding at a given period, 62%, 57%, 48%, 35%, and 10% of women exclusively breastfed since birt… Show more

“…Reports from Moncton, New Brunswick [11] and the Monteregie region of Quebec [8] show higher breastfeeding initiation rates (83% and 80%, respectively) than those identified in this study (73%). In 1983, Yeung [14] reported initiation rates of 71% for Canadian mothers, whereas the results from the 2003 Canadian Community Health Survey [20] indicated national initiation rates of 85%.…”

“…The relatively low response rate provided sufficient data for a market assessment and dietary information about Canadian infants that is not available nor been reported elsewhere. The sample size is also considerably larger than followed in other Canadian studies [6][7][8][9][10][11]14]. Heinz Canada agreed to share this information in order to provide data on feeding patterns of Canadian infants.…”

“…6 We excluded breast feeding because fidelity was expected to be poor over time owing to low breast-feeding rates. 28 Our study had several strengths. First, the double-dummy design and blinding of outcome assessors minimized performance and detection bias.…”

“…The initiation of breastfeeding ranges from 91.1% in Ontario [9] to 85.6% in Alberta [10] and 72% in Quebec [11]. Breastfeeding continuation up to 6 months was reported to be 22.8% in Southwestern Ontario [12], 37.2% in Alberta [10] and 32% in Montérégie, Quebec [13]. The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at 6 month, however, is much lower.…”
