Unconscious Effects of Action on Perception

Abstract: We spend much of our life predicting the future. This involves developing theories and making predictions about others’ intentions, goals and about the consequences of the actions we are observing. Adapting our actions and behaviours to the environment is required for achieving our goals, and to do this the motor system relies on input from sensory modalities. However, recent theories suggest that the link between motor and perceptual areas is bidirectional, and that predictions based on planned or intended ac… Show more

“…auditory, visual, etc.) predictions made by these models influence the online processing of sensory information, such as music, coming from the external environment (Schütz-Bosbach & Prinz, 2007;Witt, 2011;Halász & Cunnington, 2012;. The particular influence of these predictions on the perception of music differs depending on the nature of the auditory information (when merely listening to music), or audio-visual information (when watching and listening to a music performance, for instance).…”

“…Based on these empirical findings it has been argued that judgments of physical properties of the surrounding environment, such as length, height, and slope, are influenced by the motor actions that would be afforded to overcome them [ 22 , 23 ]. Climbing a hill is energetically costlier when burdened with heavy load.…”

“…Forward and inverse models are intricately linked in perception and action whether movements are executed, experienced, or just observed ( Wolpert and Kawato, 1998 ; Maes et al, 2014 ). However, Halász and Cunnington (2012) argue that predictive theories, based on forward models, offer the best explanation for how the motor system shapes action perception. In the following section we outline behavioral and neuroscience studies providing evidence for inverse and forward models of perception and action.…”
