Abstract: PURPOSE Mammography is not always available or feasible. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the diagnostic performance of ultrasound as a primary tool for early detection of breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we comprehensively searched PubMed and SCOPUS to identify articles from January 2000 to December 2018 that included data on the performance of ultrasound for detection of breast cancer. Studies evaluating portable, handheld … Show more

“…It allows immediate identification of obvious benign lesions such as cysts and galactocoeles that require no further evaluation and has shown an overall pooled sensitivity and specificity of 80.1% and 88.4%, respectively, for detection of malignancy and any solid Review breast lesion warrants a biopsy. 30 Mammography is additionally used by acquiring one mediolateral oblique view to look for microcalcifications or tissue distortion supporting the diagnosis of malignancy, in case of equivocal ultrasound. 7 31 In case of malignancy, locoregional and distant staging is required for further treatment planning and comprises the assessment of primary tumor properties, including tumor size, local extent, multifocality in the ipsi-or contralateral breast, and assessment of regional and supraclavicular lymph nodes.…”

“…In LMICs, these imaging modalities would likely be cost-prohibitive. Sood et al conducted a meta-analysis on the use of ultrasound to detect breast cancer in LMICs and found a pooled diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 89% and 99% [ 64 ]. The study concluded that ultrasound could be used in LMIC to detect breast cancer.…”

“…Ultrasound (US) systems are employed in medical diagnosis for the imaging of tumors [1][2][3][4][5], often used for early cancer detection [6,7]. Their practice is not expensive for the patient and is easy to use in a hospital ward and in medical clinics.…”
